The mining prospectus sale held November 5, again set a number of records. There were noticeable trends in buying strength, as well as a number of great buys for collectors or dealers. Our new on line bidding procedures make it easier for clients to watch the bidding before the auction, but please remember that this is an indication of where lots will open the next day. As usual, it took considerable time to enter last minute bids that came in fast and furious the last two hours before absentee bids closed. These were never posted on the web. A small crowd attended the live sale with our usual catered lunch, while about a fifteen phone bidders participated live. The top sellers were all highly pictorial. The Crown King of Arizona with the three lithographs, sold for $1092.50. The top selling lot was a spectacular photographic prospectus on the Penn-Wyoming Co. which was a scam from start to finish. It sold for $1,265. Another highly photographic booklet promoting Bingham, Utah sold for $920.
NEVADA:
Bullfrog material did well as expected, though the best piece sold for a bargain - the rare Rhyolite book, lot 806, sold for $690. Other Bullfrog lots averaged about $250 each. The two pictorial Mines of Tonopah and Goldfield, one with a green cover and the other with a red cover, both with identical contents sold for $517.50 (lot 771) and $690 (lot 818). Collectors argued that lot 818 was the better of the two, thus receiving a higher price. Annual reports were a pleasant surprise, highlighted by lots 833, 834, and 835, all from the Tonopah Mining Co. These sold for $575, $373.75, and $460 respectively. Two Comstock items also had heavy bidding, the rare 1865 Sutro piece, lot 846 ($517.50) and lot 847, the Comstock folding pocket map at $575. The White Pine, Nevada area material had good floor, absentee and telephone action as well. Avid collector and dealer Mark Rogers commented "I tried to buy all the important lots and bid my limit."
COLORADO:
Colorado had several areas of important competition. These included the Georgetown area with lots 399, 400, and 401 selling for $431.75, $575, and $258.75 respectively. A rare Russell Gulch piece brought $546.25 (lot 441) and as usual, the Ouray County material was strong as was the Park, Pitkin, and Pueblo County material. A rare Cripple Creek Mining Manual, lot 527, sold for $632.50.
CALIFORNIA:
Southern California counties showed the most strength and competition. Imperial, Inyo, Kern, and San Bernardino counties were all strong, as were the San Diego mining areas such as Julian. The Imperial County material averaged about $275 per lot. San Bernardino material was high. Lot 332, the Providence Gold and Copper Co. sold for $805. The Lucky Baldwin piece, lot 340, missing a page, sold for $690, reflecting it's incredible rarity. The Johannesburg piece, lot 336, sold for $517.50. The rare Orange County tin piece, lot 315, sold for $488.75.
Mexico: Several of the Mexico pieces brought interest, especially lots 168 ($287.50), 170 ($ 258.75), and 188 ($373.75).
