999. Storey. Gold Hill. Gold Hill Drug Store Bottles. Lot of 2 different bottles. Two different embossed clear drug store bottles from Gold Hill. J. Jones, Jr,/ Gold Hill, Nev./ JJ monogram at left, 4.5" tall; J. Jones Jr., Gold Hill, Nev./ Druggist in ribbon pattern. Both square. Jones ran his business from 1864-1890 at Gold Hill. He came from a New York druggist background, whose bottles are also found in Gold Hill from time to time. Both are mint with very light stain. Provenance: Dunn collection. Est. $75-150

1000. Storey. Gold Hill. Gold Hill Miner's Union Check, 1917. Treasurer's warrant (check) with vignette of miner at left, signed by H. R. Symons as VP and William Stack, secretary. Printed by Sutherland (VC). Scarce. Est. $20-40

1002. Storey. Virginia City. A. M. Cole Aqua Patent Medicine Bottle. 6.5" tall, 2 7/8" across face, 1 3/4" wide. Light interior stain. This is one of the top colored Nevada drugstore bottles. It has only a very minor old chip 1/16" on the front lip. Cole was the most prolific of the Virginia City druggists and the longest lasting. He was there as early as 1863. I think this bottle dates to the 1870-1875 period. At one time I found an advertisement for a patent medicine handled by Cole that fit perfectly into the sunken panel on the back side, but did not retain it at the time because I never expected to rewrite the bottle book. I've searched every directory and many newspapers trying to find it again to no avail. There are about 12 to 15 of these pretty aqua medicines in western collections, not nearly enough to go around. Provenance: H. Dunn collection, one of the original Bottle Book census bottles. Est. $1000-2000

1003. Storey. Virginia City. A. M. Cole Medicine Bottle. A. M. Cole/ Druggist/ Virginia. Clear, square, 4" tall, 1 7/8" across each side, beveled edges with 1" panels. Very light stain and one pinpoint ding on the lip. The lip on this bottle is crudely flattened, typical of the oldest Cole variant. I believe this variant to date from the 1860's through perhaps 1872 based on the holes these have come out of in Virginia City. This would perhaps be Cole's first drug bottle, only predated by the Morrill apothecary as the oldest drugstore bottle in Nevada. Provenance: Dunn Collection. Est. $50-100

1004. Storey. Virginia City. A. M. Cole Medicine Bottle. A. M. Cole Apothecary/ Virginia City, Nev. Rectangular, clear drug store bottle with beveled edges and a sunken front panel, with the embossing in script. 4 7/8" tall. Stained, nearly mint with 2 small lip dings pinhead size. Circa 1890-1900. Very Rare. This bottle is typical of those that held women's scented or perfumed skin crèmes. Provenance: Dunn collection. Est. $100-300

(Whore house doctor) He specialized in medicines for VD and for the ladies, regularly advertising these facts in his newspaper ads. In VC he was in business from 1868-1878, but made few bottles. He came from a long line of druggists, many of whom worked in San Francisco from the gold rush period well into 1900. John Mackay

John W. Mackay was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1835. He first went to New York as a young man, then in 1852 was off to the gold fields of California. His first mining experience was in placer mining at Alleghany in Sierra County. He struck out for Virginia City at the first part of the Comstock boom, working on a tunnel at the Union mine, at the north end of the Comstock Lode. By 1863, Mackay had gone to the Knetucky mine at Gold Hill. There, with the backing of Flood and O'Brien, they continued through 1868. They made their first $100,000 on the Hale & Norcross mine in 1865-6, and James G. Fair (see lots below for Fair's biography) took the place of one of the partners in 1868. Mackay made a name for himself with miners because he came up from the bottom ranks, and even after becoming wealthy, would review activities underground every day. This hands-on approach was critical in later dealings on the Comstock. The foursome, sometimes known as the Silver Kings, made hundreds of millions of dollars in their investments. They owned portions of most of the large companies in America, except the railroads. This included the largest bank in America - the Nevada Bank of San Francisco, the largest insurance company, the largest mine (Con-Virginia), large timber holdings and many mills and supply businesses for the mines. Mackay and his partners manipulated every aspect of the mining trade to their advantage, often to the disadvantage of shareholders. Mackay later became involved with overseas telegraph. He and his descendants have generously given back to Nevada in many ways. The Mackay School of Mines at at the University of Nevada, Reno continues the John Mackay tradition of Good Geology and Engineering today.

James G. Fair

James G. Fair was born in Ireland in 1831 and came to America in 1843. He was hit by the gold bug right away. Fair went to the Feather River country in 1850. In the early 1850's he had landed various mine superintendent positions in Angels and other places in the Mother Lode region. Teh Comstock Lode called in 1860. He became superinteendent of the Hale and Norcross in Virginia City in 1867 and probably met John Mackay about that time. The two had similar business interests and strategies. They teamed up with saloon owners Flood and O'Brien of San Francisco to get majority interests in key mines on the Comstock, a trick also perfected by Sharon and Ralston. Their first big attempt at mine monopoly failed with the Bullion mine, but when Ralston, Sharon and Hayward pulled it off at the Crown Point about 1871-2, they went after the mines that made up the new Con Virginia Co, which made them wealthy beyond their dreams. Mackay and Fair also owned mines in Arizona, California and even the Georgia gold region. Fair went on to become a US Senator from 1881-1887, promoting silver issues in the Senate at a time when they were trying to demonetize silver. Fair and Mackay owned 95.5% of the Nevada Bank of San Francisco which was the largest bank in America at one time.
