948. Utah. Salt Lake. Salt Lake City. Deseret News, 1857. Printed September 23, 1857. The paper has 8 pages, two of which contain an article entitled “History of Joseph Smith” which the paper was running in serial format. More importantly, this issue includes a report by George Smith entitled “Troops for Utah”. The report is a synopsis of his trip to the southern towns of Utah informing them to be prepared for war at the request of Brigham Young. The article is quoted in Juanita Brooks book Mountain Meadows Massacre (1950, p.26). The year 1857 was a tense time in Utah’s history. During that year, information was reaching Church officials that the U. S. Government had amassed 2500 troops that were outfitted with heavy wagons and a herd of cattle numbering 7000 head. The approaching army was believed to be outfitted to endure a lasting fight in Utah. Church headquarters in Salt Lake City were in close contact with the southern extremities of the “Kingdom”, with orders and information easily passed to towns such as Cedar City and Kanosh in only 2 days. The Church, with Brigham Young fully in charge, was determined to fight to the last drop of blood and in July, 1857, the entire Mormon community was ordered to be prepared for war. Utah’s southern towns and communities took the war preparation to a “nationalist” fervor; every able bodied man was drilling daily in the town squares, preparing to march at the first sighting of the enemy. This fervor led to one of the most horrific events to take place in Utah, the Mountain Meadows Massacre. There is abundant confusion surrounding the details that led up to the Massacre with even the actual date and exact location in dispute, placed between September 2 and 12, 1857 and south of Cedar City. The victims of the massacre were immigrants on their way to California. The party had traveled through Salt Lake City in August, and chose to take the southern route to avoid a fate the Donner Party had incurred in the Sierra Nevada. The party was believed to number around 112 men, women and children. As part of the war preparation, Brigham Young had ordered the people of Utah not to trade or offer assistance to the immigrant parties that were forced to cross Utah. The order was not an attack of the travelers, but rather a conservation food sources if war began and endured. The unfortunate victims that fell at the hands of the southern Mormons were not just innocent bystanders peacefully traveling through Utah. The men in the party were reported to be outspoken anti Mormom claiming to be participants in the murder of Joseph Smith in Missouri, the impotence for the Mormon exodus to the promised land, Utah. One of the men was even reported to be brandishing a pistol that was claimed to have been the gun that shot Smith. Most of the inhabitants in Utah were still bitter and revengeful over the loss of the Mormon founder, Joseph Smith, having only been a decade since the settlement of Utah. As the party was repeatedly denied supplies and trade by the settlements they passed, an antagonism brewed with a breaking point at Cedar City. Some of the men from the party resorted to stealing of supplies and allowing their cattle to ravish fields, at the peak of the harvest. This brings us to the importance of the article published on Sept 23, 1857. The main focus of George Smith’s visit to southern Utah was to meet with the appointed military general Isaac Haight. During their visit, Haight stated that he would not be willing to wait for orders from Salt Lake if the enemy (US Troops) were sighted, to which George Smith regarded as courage as printed in the Deseret News article. Who was to blame for the Mountain Meadows Massacre is still unclear, with George Smith as one of the accused leading from the fact that he did not instruct Haight and his southern militia to wait for responses from Salt Lake City, essentially acting autonomously. The importance of this issue of the Deseret News is evident in the time line culminating in the massacre of the emigrating party. Space does not allow for more in depth details surrounding the massacre nor the outcome of the US troops advancement on Utah. For further reading please see Mountain Meadows Massacre (Juanita Brooks, 1950). Extremely fine. Est. $300-600
