Ten camels were landed at New York, but all save one pair, a male and a female, died soon after from the effects of the voyage. The survivors were transferred to Nevada, whose sandy and sterile soil produces an abundance of prickly shrubs which no other animal would touch. On this kind of food the single pair of camels flourished and multiplied, and their descendants nor number over one hundred. They are hardy, useful animals, and, as shown in our illustration on page 501, are capable of good service as beasts of burden in the sandy wastes of the Southwest.” Bottom edge has been wrinkled, but would flatten well. They were used to transport salt from the Rhodes Salt Marsh in Mineral County to the mills in Virginia City. “Apparently the camel trains became quite numerous, for a Virginia City ordinance prohibited the humped beasts from entering the city during certain hours of the day to prevent stampeding of horses.” (Paher, Nevada Ghost Towns & Mining Camps, p.443). 917. Nevada. Storey. Virginia City. Yellow Jacket Mining Co Brass Bullion Seal. Nevada Territory. With beehive vignette at center. This 1.5 inch diameter brass sealer (positive side) was made into a hammer about 1900 by our consignor’s father. It appears to have been used thus for small nails for a brief period, causing damage primarily in one area of the seal above the beehive in the area of the junction of the words Nevada Territory. The hammer must not have worked well, as its use as a hammer appears to have ceased after the brief poundings evidenced on the seal. The Yellow Jacket was originally incorporated in San Francisco in 1863. It was late in comparison to the Ophir, Chollar, Savage and some of the other important mining companies. Since it was incorporated in 1863, rather than 1860, it was in Nevada Territory, but still carries the beehive, perhaps part of an original vignette designed in 1862 or before when this part of Nevada was within Utah Territory. This important piece is one of only a handful of territorial sealers extant, and perhaps the only one extant from an important mine. Ex. Rare. Est. $400-800
