640. California. Eastern Counties. Sonora & Mono Wagon Road Document Archive, 1863-1865. Incredible set of original documents dating from 1863 to 1865 associated with the construction, progress, funding, and maintenance of the famous Sonora and Mono (Aurora) Wagon Road which originated in Sonora and went through Tuolumne, Stanislaus, San Joaquin, and Mono Counties, terminating in Aurora. This road was a necessity due to the commerce and trade into Mono County from the other side of the Sierra Nevada during the Aurora boom in the early 1860’s. Road construction was to be financed by the sale of bonds from each county to pay the contractors. The Sonora & Mono Wagon Road Board was organized on the 20th of May, 1863, and consisted on the following: W. J. Heslep, President, Tuolumne County Commissioner, H. T. Handy, Secretary & Engineer, Commissioner of San Joaquin County, James Allen, Stanislaus County, J. D. Patterson, Mono County. The winning contractors, J. D. Patterson and A. H. Allen, both from the settlement of Bridgeport, formed the Road Company in 1864. The first part of the contract was to complete and open a single track by the first day of October 1864, and then a double wagon track by the first day of October 1865. The Road Company was not able to comply and problems arose not only with this but with also the issuance of bonds to finance the project. From the start, the project was plagued with problems, many of which resulted in litigation. The road was eventually finished and opened. This lot contains 25 pieces including Draft Official Bond of the Sonora and Mono Road Commissioners; Petition to for an extension of time to complete road; Reports of Progress; Legal Papers associated with issue of bonds from the various counties to pay to contractors for work; Abstract of Accounts allowed for various months and allocation (proportion) to the 4 counties; Writs of Mandamus to issue bonds; Papers involving litigation arising from negligence in issue of bonds for work; Receipts of Bonds; Board of Sonora & Mono Wagon Road Reports of transactions, progress, expenses to the Honorable Board of Supervisors of Mono County, & more! This is a significant and important part of early Mono County and Aurora history! Several pieces have the county seals and revenue stamps. Est. $3000-5000
641. California. Inyo. Argus. Star of the West Mining & Milling Co Sign. Unique Old Corrugated Metal Sign painted in black with “Star of The West M&M Co., /Brown, Cal.” The Star of the West Mine was located in the early 1890’s and a Mill built around 1895 in Wilson Canyon high up in the Argus Range in Inyo County. The Argus Range is bordered on the East by the Searles and Panamint Valleys, and on the West by the Indian Wells Valley and Coso Mountain Range. In all probability, this sign hung or was painted on the side of the Mill Office that was located in the town site of Brown, Inyo County, California, which was about 12 miles due west of the Mill. The Mine and Mill main business office was no doubt built in Brown as it was the closest town with a post office and along a major route. Today only bits of rusted cans and purple glass are all that remain of Brown on old Brown Road about 10 miles North of Inyokern. The original mill site and mine were located on what is now the U.S. Navy Test Range at China Lake, California, and nothing remains of it today. Sign has been professionally framed in antique wood.
