Published by JS & C. Adams, 1840. Hardcover, brown with floral detailing, gold lettering on spine faded. Cover is very worn. Pull out Paleontological Chart at front has been colored with what looks like water colors; it has been repaired with Christmas stickers. Has another pull out chart of Stratified Rocks. Covers rock classification, chemistry and mineralogy of geology, lithological characters of stratified rocks, and of unstratified rocks, paleontology, aqueous and atmospheric agencies in producing geological changes, the history of geology and more! Illustrated and indexed. Pages show foxing and general aging, but all text is legible. Overall conditon is fair. Est. $150-300

440. Mining. General. Gas Engines & Producers. Written by Lionel Marks and Samuel Wyer in 1908. This book outlines the internal combustion engine. The introduction of gas powered engines to mining allowed for hoists to be able to handle heavy loads brought up shafts of relatively great depth. The second leaf is inscribed with “John W. Townsend, 412 So. Blake Ave., Goldfield, Nev., Mar 7, 1909.” Townsend may have been an mining engineer in Goldfield wanting to learn more about gas engines. 450. Mining. General. Mineral Industry, Its Statistics, Technology & Trade, 1892-1899. Lot of 8 volumes. Edited by Richard P. Rothwell who was the editor of the prestigious Engineering & Mineral Journal, a publication of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. The Mineral Industry publications presents the annual statistics of the mining business as compiled by E &MJ. The volumes are organized alphabetically by product. Each product section may discuss, in early volumes, the history of production of the metal; production during the past year; metal markets; processes; costs of production. As an example, the 1893 volume has 100 pages on gold and silver, it lists gold production throughout the world both for the past year and historically. There are short discussions of important mines. Volume II lists all the mining companies on the Transvaal; Rickard records the mining progress in Colorado. Each volume contains about 500-600 pages and is indexed. This volume covers “From Earliest Times to the end of 1892.” Contents include Aluminum, Antimony, Asbestos, Gold and Silver, foreign countries and more. The book gives a chronology of the Gold and Silver Industry from 1442-1892. Vol. 2, 1893, 894 pp with index, additional 11 pp of advertising. This volume covers the same as Vol. 1, but for the year 1893. It also discusses the effects of the low price of silver. &#x201CThe demonetization of silver, begun in the latter year [1873], was finally completed in 1893 by the repeal of the Sherman law in the United States, which withdrew the last of the great nations of the world from the futile attempt to uphold the price of the metal, while furthermore the Indian mints were closed to the coinage of silver. At present time, therefore, the only countries which are on a silver basis, wholly or partially, are Mexico, some the South American nations, and the East. The book was originally written by a Frenchman and covers mining on a worldwide perspective. It covers coal, metallic mines, gems and precious stones and geological sections – this section gives overviews of mining in the world. It discusses Mercury of New Almaden mines, The Comstock Lode etc. This is a great book! Fascinating to look at and interesting to read. A wonderful historical volume. It appears to have been rebound at some point, although the cover does show some wear, the fly leaf looks very new. Interior pages show foxing, but overall this book is in very good condition. 516 pp plus index and addenda. Est. $300-500

Cover shows normal wear for its age. Front and back cover pulling away from spine, but binding is good. A previous owner of the book wrote their name in the book in several places. The book was designed to aid mineralogists and miners in conducting productive work. It covers the “useful” minerals and their properties as well as mining construction and machinery and sinking wells. Very good condition overall. Est. $100-200

464. Mining. General. Report of the Director of the Mint…, 1889. 246pp, the last several pages are missing with the indexing being cut off at the O’s. Gold production chart on the first page indicates that in 1888 more than $33 million was mined in the U.S. Starting on page 87, there are charts that breakdown production by county of the western states. Some of the states, including Colorado, Nevada, Idaho and Montana are broken by the individual companies, their production within each county. Cover missing. Pages in very fine condition. The first section is a historical sketch of gold discovery in the west. There are sections on ore deposit characteristics of California and Nevada, including placer gold, Mother Lode, mercury and borax. Another section offers the general cultural and geographical features of certain mining regions. Professionally rebound, but in a very unique style of fold out hard boards. Pages in very acid and in poor condition. Est. $125-175

This little book covers Prime Minerals and Rocks, The Formations, Precious Stones, Stock Companies, Stock Dealing, Stock Tricks, Gold and Silver, Industrial Metals, Coal and Oil, Industrial Minerals. Those of you familiar with our catalogs know that we like to point out mining scams and apparently this author wanted those investors of his times to be aware as well: “Simple tricks, like lines, have length without breadth or thickness, and can be seen from end to end by good eyes.” He goes on to tell of different kinds of stock scams including salting, reorganizations and consolidations among others. Hardcover, blue cloth with black trim and gilt lettering. Binding is good, but cover is worn and cracked along spine. Est. $75-150

This mining manual was designed for “Prospectors, Miners & Schools; Showing Where and How to Search for Gold and Silver Mines, and to Make Tests.” The first chapter is on Mineralogy and has an excellent chart of the common minerals that might be found with ore rocks. The chart offers common names, luster, cleavage and other pertinent items necessary for identification. The chart than has a listing of the Ore minerals such as Argentite and others. Within the chapter on Metallurgy there are descriptive paragraphs on performing assays. Following this section is a brief overview of geology in general especially lithology. There are several pages full of small text that outline the Mining Laws of Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico. There is even a few pages devoted to the process of filling a claim notice. Published by “The Electrician” Printing and Publishing Company, Ltd, London. Also published in New York, Japan, India. Illustrated, 203 pp with index, additional catalog of “Selected Standard Electro-Technical Books…” available. The book covers Explosives, Detonators and Fuses, Exploders, Wires and Cables, Testing, Practical Applications, plus several chapters on the accidents that can happen from using explosives and from the conditions when explosives are used (i.e. dusts that become explosive etc.) The book was published to help reduce the number of accidents caused by carelessness and thoughtlessness. The introduction reports: “In Great Britain alone 106 mine explosions have been caused by shot-firing during the past 10 years. In the same period, more than 3,000 persons have been injured and over 500 killed by accidents arising out of the use of explosives. On the average, one person is injured every day and one dies as the result of his injuries each week throughout the year.” Hardcover, black cloth with gilt lettering. The author begins with an in depth history focusing on the last five days prior to the sinking of the vessel of the East Coast in a terrible hurricane. Then the story goes on to describe how Tommy Thompson was able to salvage the enormous wealth of the ship wreck from 8,000 feet of water; something even the US Navy would not undertake. One of the greatest treasure finds in modern history and a great true story. Extremely fine. Est. $20-40

This is probably the most unique and important Report to the Director of Mint volumes. This is the only time that the U. S. Mint describes their own practices on assaying. A unique method once thought to be a government secret (See pages 143-150). On page 466, there is a discussion on the tolerances of gold and silver in U. S. Coinage. And the highlight of this volume is found on pages 92-96. Here, described in a detailed final report, is the public announcement of skimming of silver and money at the Carson City Mint.
