327. Culinary. Candy. The Candy Maker, 1897. Published by Excelsior Publishing, NY. Pages are numbered from 477-556. This is the 10th volume in a series of the “The Home Mechanic” which was published by the Excelsior company. The cover shows a candy maker mixing ingredients in a large suspended bowl. The book was intended for the home maker and the shop owner. But more focused toward the home cook. Original soft bound cover. Wear and creases to corners. Very fine. Est. $75-150

332. Economics. General. Let’s Take A Bearing, Economic Review & Outlook by Henry H. Clifford, 1964. 40 pages. This soft bound booklet, 6 x 4, was written as a mailer from the offices of Clifford Associates. The booklet is an informational piece perhaps for the novice investor. Included with the booklet is a postcard mailer to determine whether the person would like to remain on the mailing list. It appears that the Clifford family had written several different informational booklets that the company then mailed out to its clients. An excellent marketing tool, and a great word of mouth advertising scheme. Clifford had acquired one of the best California collections. Very fine. Est. $25-50 (no illustration)
EDUCATION
333. Education. Workbook. German Tutor’s Notebook. Contains lessons for addition, subtraction, fractions and word problems. Written entirely by hand in German Script. Tutor’s name was Jacob Morÿ, probably a German immigrant, perhaps teaching German immigrant children. The place is unknown. Each student is listed on a loose attendance/payment sheet (probably fastened to book at one time), dated from January to February, 1828. The rest of the book takes place over 1937 to 1841, with lessons and practice questions for students, “Reduction Ganzer Zablen” (Reduction of mixed numbers). Very neat piece of early American history. The book appears to have been a blank notebook, as we would buy today, with a standard manufacturer’s cover, entitled the American Eagle. A quote in the center of the front cover reads, “A liberal Education possesses us of a companion that is our delight in prosperity…Cicero.” Printed by J. Metcalfe & Co, 172, Germantown Rd., Kensington. The back cover has an “Ode” by James N. Barker, Esq., regarding the Centennial for the birth day of Washington. Four signature book, string bound, with a Greek or Roman design border, different on front and back. 8” x 12”. Approximately 120pp. Fine, signatures are detached from cover, which is now quite damaged at the spine. Much thanks to Ermine Clark for translating the material. Est. $75-150

FIRE
339. Fire. General. They Wouldn’t Take Ashes for an Answer by David Warren Ryder, 1948. This book honors the volunteer firefighters who fought the flames and disasters only to arise again. The author refers to these men as the “true pioneers”. “The story of Fireman’s Fund is a story of this spirit - the spirit of men who refused to take ashes for an answer!” is the author’s summary. There are wonderful sketches of the major fire catastrophes that plague this country in the mid-late 1800’s and early 1900’s. The sketches are in black on a yellow-orange background. Soft bound, 41 pages and 9 x 6. The cover has chips and wear along edges. Very fine. Est. $25-50

340. Foreign. Art. Gallerie zu Schiller’s Werken, c. 1850. There are 28 prints of Schiller’s works on 6 x 8.5” pages. Each image is captioned in German(?). Two of the images are of Schiller himself. The pages have staining on the paper from moisture or water, but the images are not affected. The images are not bound but are loose within a blue hard bound cover with gilt lettering. Est. $300-600

343. Gems. Diamond Mines of South Africa, Volumes I and II, 1906 by Gardner F. Williams. Published by B. F. Buck & Co, NY. Original mint copy with clean leather and corners. The copy is so tight we suspect it was seldom viewed. Contains hundreds of illustrations and fine plates, both black/white and color. This appears to be the third edition following editions of 1902 and 1904. There is a preface by Williams dated “August, 1904”. Rare. Extremely fine. Est. $1000-3000

Hardcover, has color plate glued to front cover showing different minerals. Mint condition. This adds a little twist to the usual stories of the West by covering gems as well as gold. Est. $25-50
345. Gems. Gems, Selected from the Antique with Illustrations, 1804. Printed for J. Murray by C. Whitingham, London. 60pps of textwith 19 engraved plates plus cover page plate. Listed in various bibliographies as authored by Richard Dagley, but we are unable to find that name printed in the work. Very fine professional cover and fly leaves. Dark turquoise leather with 3 gilt borders, raised ribbed spine with gilt lettering. Gilt floral patterns adorn the interior boards at page edges. “The intention of the present work is to disseminate a love of the fine arts and to introduce the general reader to a familiar acquaintance with engraved gems. These interesting productions of art are not universally known.” The work has an illustration of each piece with an attendant description of the piece, the meaning behind the depicted scene or vignette and the piece’s history including where it resided as of 1804. A lengthy scholarly essay precedes the descriptions discussing the history behind engraved gems. It is a remarkable compilation and historical record of some of the better known carved gems through history. Rare. Est. $500-1500
346. Gems. Genesis of a Diamond, 1904. Transactions of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. Written by Gardner Williams, of Kimberely, South Africa. This is a brief overview of how a diamond forms and the conditions necessary. 16 pages. There is a folded page included from the Australian Mining Standard, 1900, with an article on diamonds in volcanic breccia found in New South Wales. Both very informative and in very fine condition.
