100. Adventure. Fiction. Crusoe’s Island, California and Washoe, by J. Ross Browne, 1867. Published by Harper & Bros. 436 pages with many illustrations. Very worn and faded covers and corners. Binding is beginning to loosen. Minor foxing to front and rear leaves. Very rare. This is great work by Browne on the early days of the Comstock, circa 1860-1862 based on his travels there twice. It also has a wonderful section on his adventures to the South Atlantic where he was paid by Harper’s Magazine to investigate what was thought to be Robinson Crusoe’s Island, even though Daniel Defoe had said during his lifetime that it was a work of fiction. This is great literature for the Comstock or literary historian. Great plates. Est. $250-500

ARIZONA
123. Arizona. General. Arizona Highways Magazines. Lot of 5 volumes. The first volume is for June, 1979 featuring articles Coming of Age in Apache Land, Dramatic Skies of Arizona and others. The cover photo is of one of the renowned sunsets of Arizona. The second volume is December, 1979. This issue features articles about Christmas and contains spectacular flowing cacti photos. Cover is of a Suaguaro in bloom. The third issue is July, 1980. Articles include Bonanza Gold, Prospecting Then and Now, Getting into the Gold Game, High Grading at the Vulture Mine (please see Auction #12 for an in depth story on the Vulture mine) and other gold related stories. The fourth volume is March, 1985. This issue is devoted to the famous mining camps of Arizona such as Jerome, Tombstone and Bisbee. The front cover shows a wonderful display of mining and western collectibles: bottles, a certificate, locks, etc. The last piece in this lot is a six page brochure put out by the Arizona State Highway Dept and the Petrified Forest Museum, 1950. This 12 x 9 booklet is full of color photographs of the Petrified Forest in Arizona and contains a four page write-up. All very fine. Est. $20-30

This is a compilation volume with 23 articles written mostly by geologists working in the private industry. The major copper districts of Arizona, as well as more well known districts in Nevada, Utah and New Mexico, are all represented in 5-15 pages articles with diagrams. One of the articles is written by Harrison Schmitt. Schmitt was the first and only geologist to go into space. This pamphlet (as referenced by the author) describes the climate, vegetation and topography in order to entice immigration to the Territory. It is interesting to note that Cochise County is spelled with an a (Cachise). The last section is titled The Wants of Arizona. Indexed. Professionally rebound, hardcover, black cloth, gilt lettering on spine. There are a few notes penciled in. Covers history, climate, vegetation, timber, mining and metallurgy, topography, geology, descriptions of mineral deposits. This excerpt regarding the Planet Copper Mine gives a good indication of the kind of information found in this book: “Claims. Thirty-one lode claims, 3 placers and 2 mill sites constitute the land holdings of the Planet Company. Survey for patent was being carried on in April, 1909. Development. The principal work on the Planet properties consists of an inclined shaft, No. 1, the first 40 feet of which pitches 45 (degrees) and the remainder about 15 (degrees). 148. Bank Robberies. William J. Burns National Detective Agency, 1911. This booklet was a second annual report to the Standing Protective Committee of the American Bankers’ Association. The report lists banks that were robbed and the towns and states were they were located. There is also an alphabetical list of the persons arrested and convicted for bank robberies. The booklet has nearly 80 pages of text summarizing the hold ups that took place in 1910. 95 pages. 9 x 6. Soft bound cover. The cover has a stripe across the front that was probably holding the booklet closed and the rest of the cover faded. Wear and minor chips along edges and to the binding. Very fine. Est. $50-150

The title page states the title of the book as “Moody’s Analysis of Investments and Security Rating Books.” Published by Moody’s Investors Service with offices across the US and abroad. Companies are listed alphabetically and by their respective security (credit) rating. Each volume contains about 2000 pages. Within individual company descriptions are the officers, location of operations, incorporation information and budget spread sheets for the preceding year(s). Stunning reference. The descriptions offer populations, industries and incorporation information and other pertinent facts. For example, Reno had a Aa rating in 1930 and was Nevada’s largest city with 16,000 people. The Appleton’s collection is considered the quintessential biographical encyclopedia written and published prior to about 1950. The volumes are set up alphabetically and contain several portraits. The individual volumes are had bound in burgundy with an embossed coat of arms at the center of the cover. There is only minor wear to the edges and bindings.
