MICHIGAN

230.    Michigan. Houghton. Ontonagon.  Rockland MC. 1856 Annual Report.  Incorporated in Michigan 1853.  The company formed when purchase of mineral lands adjacent to the infamous Minnesota mines with the hopes of the success of that mine.  In 1855-6, a stamp mill was erected and production was near 280,000 pounds of copper ingot for $68,000.  Unfortunately, that year production costs were over $85,000.  This trend continued for the Rockland MC and in 1870, the company shut down (Wright, 1880).  Printer - Francis Wright.  Excellent condition.  19 pp.  $450

231.    Michigan. Houghton. Ontonagon.  Wolverine MC Annual Report 1904-05.  Incorporated in Michigan 1890.  The mine was originally opened in 1882 but soon failed.  The company reorganized but had difficulty securing funds due to the earlier failure.  John Stanton, treasurer, advanced most of the capital needed from his own pocket.  By 1910, the Wolverine mine was the most productive mine in the Lake Superior district with net profits over $550,000 in 1908 (Mines Handbook).  Printer - C. H. Clayton.  Front and back cover worn along edges and detached.  Fine condition.  13 pp.  $75

234.    Michigan. Houghton. Ontonagon. Winona MC Prospectus.  Incorporated in Michigan 1864.  Mining was began on veins that had been previously worked.  Little copper was recovered and by 1870, the company was idle (Wright, 1880).  The mine was taken over by the Winona Copper Mining Co in 1898 (Mines Handbook, 1906).  Printer - J. B. Chandler.  19 pp. This was Thos. Formon’s Copy.   $400

235.    Michigan. Houghton. Portage Lake.  Pewabic MC Prospectus, 1866.  Mining began in 1855 and continued until at least 1880.  The highlight of production occurred between 1861 and 1866 when an average of 2 million pounds of copper were produced.  The company was very successful mitigating the volatile price of copper by production reductions but never having to close the mine.  Near the end of the 1870’s, the company had exhausted much of the higher grade ore.  By 1882, Poole lists the Franklin Mining Co as still in operation, but not the Pewabic.  These two mines operated side-by-side from the onset of mining and were intimately related.  It is possible that a merger of the two companies occurred.  Printer - Innes & Niles.  Minor foxing along borders.   Excellent condition.  30 pp.  $350

236.    Michigan. Houghton. Portage Lake.  Quincy MC Annual Report 1865.  Incorporated in Michigan 1848.  The Quincy MC is second only to the great Calumet & Hecla mining companies of the Lake Superior region. Little work had occurred on their properties until the discovery of the Pewabic lode (vein) in 1856.  The company aggressively mined the vein and by 1866 was producing over 2 million pounds/year of copper ingot selling for $650,000 (Wright, 1880).  The ore body only became more rich and by 1893, 14 million pounds of copper were produced (Mines Handbook, 1906).  The vein was mostly exhausted by 1906 and the company was reported to be considering aggressive mineral land purchases.  Printer - John J. Bloomfield.  Excellent   condition.  20 pp.  This was Raphael Pumpelly’s copy, inscribed with his signature on the cover.   Raphael Pumpelly was one of the first Americans to be schooled at the famous Freiberg School of Mines, which he completed in 1859. His classmates were Ross Raymond, Emmons, and all the great geologists of the mid nineteenth century. Pumpelly went to Arizona as a mining engineer working on silver mines, then joined Blake in Japan.  He worked in Michigan in the late 1860’s through 1870. Clarence King chose him, along with Becker, Emmons, and Powell to be among the first geologists with the USGS.  King, of course, sent the men in very different directions in order to cover as much ground as possible before Congress  tried to change their minds and abandoned this new funny science of geology. Pumpelly got the east coast.  $425

242.   SOLD    Michigan. Houghton. Portage Lake. Norwich MC 1855 Annual Report.  Incorporated in Michigan 1855.  This report offers an excellent historical background to the copper discoveries of the Norwich and Windsor Mines located west of the Ontonagon.  The Norwich mine was discovered in 1846 by the American Exploring, Mining and Manufacturing Co.  The first ore removed were “two masses of solid copper …, on of them 110 and one of 12 pounds.  Mining by the Norwich Mining Co ceased in 1858 with a total of 500 tons mined (Wright, 1880).  It was later taken over by the American Mining Co.  A very rare Michigan mining company prospectus.  There is a large folded map in the back which is a longitudinal section of the mine.  Printer - Narine & Co.  Excellent condition.  12 pp.  $550

243.    Michigan. Ontonagon. Rockland.  Michigan Copper MC, 1906 Annual Report.  Incorporated in Michigan 1899.  An annual report for 1906.  The Michigan Copper Mining Co  was a very successful operation that controlled nearly 6,700 acres by 1910 of which 4,800 were mineral lands, 1,500 were timber and a 150 acre mill site (Mines Handbook, 1910-11).  As reported in the Copper Handbook (1910) production between 1906-10 yielded nearly 11 million pounds of copper but “the mine has proven a disappointment…” (p. 1166).  Printer - C. 250.    Montana. Cascade. Butte.  Boston & Montana Cons. Copper & Silver MC.  The 1892 annual report.  This company operated a rich deposit of copper and byproduct of silver.  Total mined tons in 1882 was near 165,000 by 1900, the figure had grown to over 2.5 million tons.  In fact by 1900, the superintendent had the foresight to concentrate mining on low-grade ore in order to save the higher grade material for when the price of copper was more favorable.  The Mines Handbook (1906) shows that the mine was still very active producing over 1.2 million tons of ore netting nearly $6 million that year.  Front cover detached.  Edges worn.  Fine condition, soft cover, 27 pp.  $100

256.  SOLD Montana. Silver Bow. Butte.  Butte & Superior MC, 1918 Annual Report.  Incorporated in 1908, the Butte and Superior Copper Co changed its name to Butte and Superior Mining Co in 1916.  This coincides with best year of production for the company: 195 million tons of zinc, 15 million pounds of lead, 2.5 million pounds of copper, 4 million ounces of silver and 6,600 ounces of gold.  After this banner year, the company began falling on less than profitable years.  Several years of litigation resulted in the Butte and Superior Mining Co paying $2.5 million dollars to settle a lawsuit levied by the Elm Orlu Mining Co and its financier the Clark Montana Realty Co.  Butte and Superior were mining underneath their claims and extracting rich ore.  Not an uncommon practice by less scrupulous miners.  To add insult to financial injury, the Mineral Separation Co was also suing Butte and Superior for patent infringements of flotation extraction methods.  The Butte and Superior also lost this suit both being resolved by the US Supreme Court in 1919.  These scenarios are well laid out in the 1919 prospectus.  Following these ordeals the company operated at a deficit until 1924.  Excellent condition, soft cover, 15 pp.  $45

263.    Montana. Silver Bow. Butte.  North Butte MC, Annual Report 1909.  Incorporated in Minnesota 1905.  This and the following 5 lots are representative of the North Butte Mining Co history.  In the first year of production and the ensuing years the North Butte MC mines were “declared to be the most sudden and spectacular success at that time known in copper mining” (Mines Handbook, 1930, p. 1341).  Although several litigations, as outlined within several of the annual reports, with neighboring companies, production was strong and consistent through the 1910’s.  By the early 1920’s, metal prices were low and the company was experiencing financial difficulty.  In 1923, all work was suspended on the Butte properties with the company transporting much of the large equipment to Arizona to develop new properties.  This was a failure and the company resumed mining on the Butte properties in the late 1920’s (Mines Handbook, 1930).  Excellent condition.  $45
