Vignettes; top center of hills with mines at base and town at top; two flanking vignettes of miners working underground. Gold border, safety print and seal. 8 x 11. Printer - Goes; W. F. Robinson Ptg. Co., Denver. Many of the mines in the Georgetown and Central City districts were exploited from tunnels driven by companies that were not necessarily in the mining business. By driving a single, long tunnel through a mountain that was riddled with small mines at the surface, the company could lease the use of their tunnel to those small mines. Entering into such an agreement, a small mining company could drive a drift from this tunnel to the deeper portions of a vein they had worked from surface operations without the expense of driving a long tunnel themselves. Such access provided a less labor intensive route for the transportation of ore and waste rock and also provided drainage of underground workings without the need for pumps. By leasing to a number of mines, the tunnel company could make a profit and each of the mines could continue development without undue expense. Checking and minor tears at fold edges, yellowing at edges, fine. Est. $25-50

The company leased mines owned by the Whiting M&MC and the Terrible Dunderburg Mining and Power Co. Also controlled older properties which included the dumps of the Seven-Thirty, Mammoth, Brown and Dunderburg workings which were better known as the Big Slide in Brown Gulch. The company was after silver lead and zinc ore from new working and from old dumps. The officers of the Denbigh Silver-Lead claim that historical production from the mines they operate is in excess of $10 million and claim to have had 100,000 tons of $10 ore left. In 1919, of every 7 tons mined one ton of ore was shipped with an average of $107/ton. The company was aggressively marketed 1917-18 by Thos. Lawson of "Frenzied Finance" fame rallying the stock price to a high of $2.25. In 1919, the price dropped to $0.20/share when he announced he was dumping his stock. He claimed that 400,000 shares were tied up in a Trust Co pool and were being unloaded as receipts claiming the company was on the verge of bankruptcy. Leading a reorganization committee, Lawson and the newly formed Denbigh Mining Co took over the property and exchanged stock at $0.10/share. The Denbigh Mining Co was dead by 1925. Vignette of steam train emerging from tunnel. Black border, gold seal and underprint. Datelined Colorado Springs, Colo. Cancelled by rubber stamp of same. 8 X 11. Printer - Goes. This company was the undoing of Sam Bernard who, with his brothers George and Douglas, made millions from the Elkton and other mines at Cripple Creek. The Bernards were grocers from Colorado Springs. In 1892 they cancelled William Shemwell's $36.50 grocery bill in exchange for half interest in his Elkton claim. George financed development work on the claim for two years until he was nearly broke. Before abandoning the property, they struck pay dirt, netting $40,000 in the first week. The Elkton eventually produced $16 million in gold. With his profits, Sam purchased the Beacon Hill El Paso that produced $11 million. Not long after the turn of the century, the brothers retired from mining, buying large ranches and raising cattle and horses. However, Samuel and George were better at mining than ranching. Sam built an elaborate mansion in San Luis Valley and constructed an enormous irrigation system operated by this company. The company wasn't profitable and Sam had to sell off shares in the Elkton and other mines to pay debts. It eventually drained him of his wealth and he died, completely impoverished, in a state hospital in 1937. (Levine, pp. 37-38) Extremely fine. Est. $200-400

Bassick, an ex-sailor, who worked at the Centennial Mining Co on Tyndal Mountain. In 1877, on his walk to work one day, he either kicked over and broke off a piece of rock that looked odd to him. He had it assayed and came back worth $30 (more than he made in one week). He quit his job and starting mining. It was first named Bassickville, then Bassick City. David Livingston, nephew of Dr. Livingston of "I presume…" fame named the town Querida which means darling or beloved in Spanish. Mining continued locally through 1923. The peak for the town was 1882 when more than 1000 people lived there. It is only a ghost town today. Very fine. Est. $50-100

Vignette of miners working underground. Black border and print. Location of mines Rosita, Col. printed on certificate. Uncancelled. 6 X 10. Printer - National Bank Note Co, NY. We found no information on the mine, but Benson noted that the author Helen Hunt Jackson visited there in 1870. There were beautiful wild roses at the springs causing her to write "not even a millionaire of mines will ever dare to dispute the vested title of the modest little flower." Rosita was a mining camp that boasted of 2000 people at its peak in the mid 1870's. Stories of gunfights abound in local histories. Production was thought to be $2-3 million, though none of the mines produced significant quantities of ore. (Benson, Vanderwilt, Eberhart, Burchard, not in C&L) Very fine. Est. $250-350

Location - Silver Cliff, Custer Co, Colorado printed at top of certificate. 5 x 9. Little to no information on this company exists within our library. But the town of Silver Cliff has rich history with the designation of the wildest mining town producing 2 million ounces of silver in 1879, as well as several spectacular gun fights that drew limited attention of the town residents. The town boomed, with a peak population of 10,000 eventually dyeing by 1893. (Eberhart, 1969, p.428-29) Wear to edges and minor foxing. Very fine. Est. $25-75

1340. Custer. Silver Cliff. Buckeye Mining & Tunneling Co. of Colorado. Incorporated in 1876. Issued to E.S. Munroe for 100 shares, cert #1437, in 1879. Signed by president Alex M. Cassidy and secretary F. A. Mute. Vignette of Colorado State Seal with hawk to left and miners to right. Black border and print. Red title. Uncancelled. 5 x 10. Printer - Jones Printing Co, NY. Owned the Silver Cliff mine with assays of $20-75/ton. Large masses of cerargyrite (silver chloride = 75%) of this ore were mined near the surface which yielded 30-50 oz/ton. At the time of this certificate was issued it has a population of 5000 with 29 grocery stores, two banks, three fine hotels, three dance halls, and 25 saloons. (Dallas, p.174-77; Balch, p. 1153; Eckel, p. 94) Alex M. Cassidy had lived in Colorado for sometime prior to his presidency of this company. In 1862, he purchased oil claims at Oil Springs, Fremont County from Gabriel Bowen. Cassidy sunk six wells that were moderately profitable. It appears that Cassidy decided to try his luck at mining. The dates of this certificate match the boom time of the Silver Cliff mining district. (Stone, 1918, p.287) Very fine. Est. $200-400

Smaller vignette at bottom left of cross section of mine shaft showing underground and above ground. Black border and print. Red Cross South Half Moon Gulch, Lake County, Colo. printed on certificate. Dateline Camden, N.J. Although this company appears to have operated in the Leadville district based on the information printed on the certificate, no reference to the company could be found under Lake county in Burchard, 1884. However, in this same publication, under Custer county is the following: "The Racine Boy and Silver Cliff lodes, the property of the Silver Cliff Mining Company, have not been worked, and the mill belonging to this company lies idle." (P. 284). Corregan (p. 192) also lists the company in Custer county with these claims plus the Wet Mountain claim. Ore extended over a depth of 150 ft, consisting of silver chlorides. Production prior to 1881 reportedly was $375,000. Corregan and Burchard seem to agree on their descriptions, info on certificate may be printer's error. Est. $25-50
