COLORADO UNKNOWN

We looked extensively in more than 100 references but still we struck out on these. We have confidence that given three days at the Colorado School of Mines Library, we would nail nearly half of these, but the time and financial budget prevents that. However, we are extremely pleased with the number of companies we did locate and the attendant biographies of some of the more noted figures of the period. Some of the references that we used left us feeling a little frustrated at the lack of information offered, the organization, or the dreaded "NO INDEX". A prime example illustrating the near insanity we endured arises from Dunbar's 1898 Colorado State Mines Directory. This reference contains a list of mining company incorporations from 1893-1898, with a list of all the companies in alpha order, and separate entries by district and county (no index, naturally). But there is no information given to where their operations were located, and when you look through every county to find a particular company listed on the incorporation list - YOU MAY NOT FIND IT! We hope that you appreciate the efforts we make to document every company's mine location(s) including the county, district and individual claim names with production numbers when we can get them. Considering there are easily more 1000 mining companies alone in this auction, we think we did well -vp.
