2271. Teller. Cripple Creek. German-American Gold Mining Co. Incorporated in Wyoming. Issued to C. E. Crawford for 1,000 shares in 1901. Certificate number 202. Datelined Colorado Springs. Signed by President W. F. Littell and Secretary Wm. M. Broyles(?). Uncancelled. Nice double vignette of miners working underground with picture in pillar of man in cage being hoisted to the surface. Orange border and some print and seal on white paper. 7 x 11. Printer not noted. The company's office was in Cripple Creek. Its property consisted on one full claim and fractions of 3 others, totaling about 16 acres located on Bull Hill. All but one were patented. Most were opened by shafts, from 20 to 200 feet in depth. Knight secretary. Brown border. Uncancelled. 8 X 11. It is unknown if John Gould was a relative of financier Jay Gould. The company owned the Romana and Atlanta claims on the south slope of Bull Hill next to the Findley. They also opened the Montgomery mine in Gilpin County. There had $6000 in production through 1899 with 25 to 50 cent stock prices. (Hills, 1900). Very fine. Est. $75-150

Vignette of miners working underground. Green border and seal. Uncancelled. 8 X 11. Printer - W. H. Kistler Staty, Denver. The company is listed as incorporated in 1895 with offices in Cripple Creek. There is a Globe mine in that district. (Dunbar, 1898). There is a Globe Hill Cons. MC that has McIntyre as secretary that is also located within Cripple Creek. That company controlled the Foggy, Good Enough and Happy Boy claims on Globe Hill. The stock is reported to be held mostly in Paris. Most of the pieces are stockholders' reports, which gives its readers the Mining Company's various goings-on and progress. The Invoice is from F.H. Gay, Broker Colorado Investments, and is in regards to A.E. Carlton's account. All pieces are very fine. 3 x 8" - 10.5 x 8". Ranging in dates from 1906 to 1938. Est. $200-400

2276. Teller. Cripple Creek. Gold Empire, Inc. Contract on Little Johnny Group and Others. Comprised of 55 acres or more, 1941. The agreement is for production on the properties by Gold Empire, which was already in production on some of the properties at the time. Est. $25-50

2277. Teller. Cripple Creek. Gold Hill M&D. Correspondence and Title Reports related to the Gold Hill M&D Co., c1913-1933. Hildreth Frost, an attorney in Colorado Springs who represented many of the mine owners, is part of the correspondence. In 1933 the company attempted to have their old waste dump processed for gold. About 25 pp. See similar images in the Titles and Abstracts Section. Est. $25-50.

2278. Teller. Cripple Creek. Gold Knob MC. Deeds dating from 1899 to 1918. Two are deeds to the Golden Cycle MC, one a special warranty deed and the other is a Quit-Claim Deed. One is signed by James Burns, and the other is signed by R. H. Reid. Burns was President of the Gold Knob. The third is a Quit-Claim Deed between Gold Knob and Hildreth Frost. All very fine. The company owned about 20 properties on about 150 acres including most of the Goldfield townsite, but no production is known. See biography on Burns. Extremely fine. Est. $100-300

Rock secretary. Vignette of three miners inspecting samples underground. Fancy masthead. Gold border, seal and underprint. Cripple Creek Gold Mining District in underprint. Uncancelled. 9 X 12. Owned the Gold Sovereign lode, J. G. Blaine lode and Gold Sovereign tunnel covering 6 acres located on Bull Hill. There is a total of 2000' of workings and plans to continue developing drifts into newly discovered ore bodies under Bull Hill. Total production amounted to $195,500 by the end of 1899. The company renewed its charter in 1915 and had leased its properties since that same year. Still active by 1931. (Hills, p.223, Mines Handbooks, 1920, 1931) Very fine. Est. $25-50

Two certificates with vignette of mill site, brown border and issued 1930 and 1951. Cancelled by hole punches. One certificate with larger vignette of mill site (very similar to others), brown border and issued 1918. Cancelled by hole punches. One certificate with no vignette, red border and cancelled by rubber stamp, issued 1968. All certificates in fine to very fine condition. Includes the 1958 & 1959 Balance Sheets. First page is titled: Golden Cycle Corporation, Midland Terminal Railway Division. Includes all months of 1959 compared to same months for 1958. The mine was located in Bull Hill. The original company was tightly held and paid nearly $200,000 in dividends through 1900. Very fine. Est. $75-150.

Selover for 100 shares in 1915. Cancelled with holes. Black print. Cancellation stamp across certificate. 7 x 10.5". The other certificate is a much later piece from 1965, and is issued to Louis Ruben for 84 shares. The signatures of both the president, Max W. Rowen, and the secretary, William M. White, are both synthetic. Rust border. Cancelled with holes at bottom. The other portion of the lot consists of two letters to shareholders, 1902, 8.5 x 5.5"; a letter on company letterhead, 1915; two payroll checks, 1960, 3.5 x 8.5"; mine treatment schedule, 1951, 11 x 8.5"; a color post card featuring a bird's eye view of the mill, 3.5 x 5.5"; and 10 checks from the company's mill department, 1913-14, 3 x 8" to 3.5 x 8.5". The latter company owned the Nil Desperandum and Rhinoceros claims on the northwest slope of Raven Hill also the Jennie Sample, Kittie Lane, Sitting Bull and Sitting Bull No 2 south of the Elkton on Raven Hill. The company claims to own the Thompson Lode which, in 1900, was developing into a controversy with the Elkton Co (perhaps the need for reorganization). (Hills, 1900) Very fine. Est. $50-100

About 200 pp detailing the title progression, ownership and company name changes from 1892-1934. The Gould Mining and Milling Co. began with the property in 1892. From there the progression was Gould Consol. MC (1901), The Gould MC (1904), Kittie Lane GMC (1912), N.L. Desperandum (1932). The lot contains title summaries, deeds, agreements, correspondence, directories, minutes, shares subscription forms, mine superintendent reports, shareholder records etc. of the companies. 2295. Teller. Cripple Creek. Hallett Family Letters. In 1895 Henry W. Hallet was a mine promoter in Cripple Creek. Another one of the Halletts was a funeral director in Colo. Springs in the 1890's. The Halletts were early prospectors in Cripple Creek, who subsequently had a mountain named after them.They staked, bought, traded and sold mining claims with regularity. This group contains correspondence (9 letters) from various people, reflecting many deals , geologic reports, grubstaking, etc. One
reproduction photo shows the Hallett and Hamburg Mine, possibly with the Halletts in the view. J. L. Hallett had Wm. Trevorrow, supt. of the Pharmacist and Victor Properties. The group contains 21 letters & 1 reproduction photo. Est. $300-600

2296. Teller. Cripple Creek. Happy Day, etc. Title Abstract for the Happy Day, White Elephant and Others Discovered by J. B. Winchell. The first claim, the Happy Day, was discovered June 16, 1891 and located 8/31/91. They leased to the Alamo MC, which was formed by Winchell and partners. About 25 pp, end 1929. Has hand drawn map, and includes a second abstract for additional neighboring properties. Est. $25-50

2302. Teller. Cripple Creek. Hills, Fred. Official Manual , Cripple Creek District, Vol. I, by Fred Hills, 1900. The book talks about the past and future of mining in the Cripple Creek District. It seems more of a directory, giving company names, followed by their incorporation dates, directors, capitalization, property, production, and history. Under each company profile is a map of its location within the C.C. District. Bright red cover, with red print in the headers, and black print in type and maps. Spine is damaged, nearly detaching the spine from the binding. Some stains on front and back cover, and pages 1-4 missing. 11 x 8. Lacks the folding map in back. Fine as a reference. This is one of the most important references for Cripple Creek companies. Est. $300-600

2312. Teller. Cripple Creek. Ingham Consolidated Gold Mining Co. Incorporated in Colorado in 1895. Certificate # 1479 issued to William P. Bonbright & Co. for 1,000 shares in 1900. Datelined Colorado Springs. Signed by President William P. Bonbright, secretary F. W. Stehr and Asst.-Secretary P. Morgan. Uncancelled. Small vignette of head of bald eagle at left edge. Black border and print on vanilla paper. 5 x 10. Printer - Western Bank Note Co., Chicago. The Company owned the Ingham, Mattie D., Jack G., Little Nellie and Wellington claims, all located on Raven Hill. Development included an office, assay office, ore houses, blacksmith and carpenter shops located at the mouth of the Mattie D. tunnel, and several other shaft houses at other locations. Most of the operations were under lease at the turn of the century. Gross production to the end of the century was about $250,000 (Hills, p. 256). It was the 400th anniversary of the visit of Christopher Columbus to America, so the company named itself Isabella in honor of the Queen of Spain. In 1897, there was 7,138 feet of development. By 1898, the number grew to 9,134'. Signed by Percy Hagerman, son of James Hagerman who built the Colorado Midland Railway to Leadville and Grand Junction. Some of the places of patronage are Myers Book Store for a plumb bob, the frequented Morrell Hardware Co., and W.D. Armstrong Stationary and Jewelry, which accounts for the company's office supplies. Sizes varied from 8 x 7" to 8 x 14". Est.-$75-150

The company was formed as a consolidation of several companies. It was the 400th anniversary of the visit of Christopher Columbus to America, so the company named itself Isabella in honor of the Queen of Spain. In 1897, there was 7,138 feet of development. Woods (Frank Woods, Warren's son) as secretary. The certificate features a vignette of a snow-topped mountain range in brown litho. 7 x 12". Woods founded the Jack Pot MC and the investment company. The abstract for the mine dates from 1891 to 1901, 8.5 x 17". The letter signed by Burns is on James F. Burns Mines company letterhead, and is addressed to V.H. Mann, with accompanying envelope. 2341. Teller. Cripple Creek. LeClair Cons Mines Co. Incorporated in Colorado 1928. Issued to John Tait Milliken for 1 share, cert #2, in 1928. Signed by John Tait Milliken President and John L. Nichols Secretary. Black print. Uncancelled. 7 X 9. Printer - Out West, Colorado Springs. Mines included the Mary McKinney, LeClair, Anaconda and the Aileen on the west slope of Raven Hill. The ores at their mines contained gold telluride. The Mary McKinney shaft was 1340' deep, total underground workings in all of the mines about 17 miles. John Tait Milliken, who had millions in St. Louis as a chemist, acquired some of David Moffat's best mines including the Anaconda and Golden Cycle for $1,700,000. In 1903, he built the Golden Cycle cyanide mill at Colorado Springs, which
was the largest and most modern cyanide mill in the world, which was used to process the gold ores from Cripple Creek. By 1908, Milliken's Golden Cycle mill had driven the Guggenheim mills out of business. In 1908, Milliken bought the United Gold Mines Co, a huge consolidation of over 100 Cripple Creek mines. (Rand & Sturgis, 1931; Sprague, 1953) Est. $150-300.

Mills, secretary of state, noting the company's incorporation and establishment of business in 1898, both affixed in the state of Colorado, and both containing the silver, state seal, 1901; deed, agreement papers, and letter to the secretary of state, all not the sale of the Lillie (Cripple Creek) GMC to the Vindicator Consol. GMC, 1904; 2 title abstracts, 1891-1896; and Land patent, noting the mining claim, 1901. This was a London financed company with offices in London and Colorado. W. Fisher ran the London office. They only owned the Lillie claim, wich had a 1,000 ft deep shaft and $1.2 million in production through 1900 (Hills). All very fine. 13 x 8.5" to 17 x 14". Est. $200-400

Along the bottom are the Lincoln, Independence Mill, a bird's eye view of the Victor, Portland and Anaconda mines. At the right are Anchoria Leland, Elkton, Pharmacist, Legal Tender. At left are the El Paso, Pike's Peak, Doctor and Vindicator mines. The color is sharp and bright with no fading. Colors are in pastel shades. There are small tears to the margin. The map covers about 100 square miles, showing all claims and company ownership from Saddle and Nipple Mountains in the south to Capazone Mountain at the north. 2395. Teller. Cripple Creek. Strong Mine Set of Level Maps: 1 (elev. 9693'), 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 (elev. 9000'), 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 19 (7787'). All of the levels were accessed by a two compartment vertical shaft near the center of the claim. The scale of the map is the typical mine scale of 1"=50'. Each map shows the level plans of the underground workings on that level. Some maps show notes on geology, or notes by the engineer on progress or possible future development. The claim boundaries are shown on each. The deeper levels show detailed geology for possible ore development. Circa 1900-191, drawn with black and other colored inks on light blue linen. Rugged on right end, as usual. Mylar sheets placed between each map for protection. This map is a critically important record of the Strong Mines. Est. $500-1000
