NATIVE SONS OF THE GOLDEN WEST ADMISSION DAY CELEBRATION BADGES

Native Sons of the Golden West [NSGW]

The Native Sons of the Golden West was formed in 1875 by Albert Maver Winn. He was a member of the Fourth of July Celebration Committee in San Francisco, and wanted to have a long lasting group of men who were the essence of California and the California gold rush. This group was composed of the sons, and later daughters, of the California Pioneers, those who were in California before the discovery of Gold, born after July 7, 1846, the day the American Flag was raised at Monterey and California "proclaimed under American rule." It became apparent to the organization that all children born in California were special, and that the organization should embrace them. The original bylaws called for white men over 17. The racial and gender requirements were quickly dropped, particularly when Romauldo Pacheco, son of early the California governor applied, and when NDGW was established for the daughters.
From the beginning, the NSGW had bright, colorful displays, badges and parades reflecting their heritage in California, particularly their mining backgrounds. The group used the California bear as a regular symbol, along with a miner and gold pan. The first group in 1875 was comprised of 21 members, plus Winn as an honorary member. The group grew fairly quickly. "They were not men of prowess nor men of lordly race. They were just a group of enthusiastic youths," according to Peter Conmy in The Origin and Purposes of the NSGW, 1966. These youths would later become a focal point in California heritage. As the original members reached mature ages, they were the ones responsible for the ornate NSGW badges and ribbons found in collections today. Over the next 100 years more than 200 different NSGW "parlors" were formed in California.
NSGW ephemera differs markedly from most fraternal order ephemera. The NSGW always colorfully displays California's historical roots, while other fraternal material usually embodies specific symbolic representations of member organizations and sects. There were NSGW parlors in nearly every California town and mining camp. Their medals and badges remain rare. Most are gold plated brass or bronze, known as gilt. They are, in general, in exemplary condition; almost uncirculated to uncirculated in coin terms.

CALIFORNIA RAILROADS

INYO COUNTY RAILS

826. Inyo. Death Valley RR Co. First mortgage, 5%, sterling sinking fund bond. Incorporated in California in 1914. Corporate signatures are unreadable. Very handsome certificate, with a vignette of a train. Red border, with black print. All original coupons are attached, on which are small vignettes of a man loading coal into train's furnace. Excellent condition. 14.5 x 9.75. Death Valley RR was built in 1914 to service a new borax mine at Ryan and connect with the Tonopah & Tidewater RR and Beatty and the Bullfrog mining district to the south and with Ludlow to the west. The line followed a very curvy route above Furnace Creek Wash., allowing for a fabulous view of the valley. The line was extended when clay mining began at Ash Meadows just over the Nevada State line. The rail line's demise came about with the depletion of ore at Ryan and the development of open pit ores more centrally located to the Southern California market. (Myrick, p.608-22). The company was formed through $60,000 in stock and $230,000 in bonds. The railroad was dubbed "the most remarkable railroad in the world" by the Technical World when it began operations in December of 1914. It ran at average of 15 mph. These bonds are very rare. This is the second we've offered, and only the third in 20 years to show up at auction. Est. $750-1000

Elsinore is at the terminus of a spur of the A.T. & S.F connecting with San Bernardino and Santa Ana. Pomona is serviced by the Union Pacific and the Southern Pacific. Not listed in Poor's Manual, 1906) Slight yellowing at top edge, extremely fine. The P & E RR was a product of a huge economic boom of 1886. This railroad added as a stimulus. The opening of the rail line corresponded with one of the highest rates of land sales in the nineteenth century in Pomona. Pomona served as a sort of terminus for so cal railroads. Within a year of initial construction, however, the Pomona and Elsinore RR was a failure. They had built only the stretch from Corona to Hoag's Canyon, and the venture fell apart. At the time, the Union Pacific and the Southern Pacific dominated rail traffic west of Ogden, UT and was necessary to construct an independent line across the Sierra to San Francisco. The expense of this endeavor was so great that it caused the eventual collapse of the Gould system. Jay Gould, who died in 1892, conceived a plan for building a coast to coast railway system. Western Pacific operated mainly in California, Nevada and Utah. In 1920, the company lines consisted of over 1,000 miles of track. WELLS FARGO MEDALS

Wells Fargo & Co has a history rich in the American West. Founded in San Francisco in 1852, they went on to develop a banking and express business that had no parallel. The pride and professionalism of their workforce was a major factor in their initial success during the California Gold Rush, which helped them against their competitors such as Adams & Co.

Nevada. Candelaria. (WF-1 [Bob Chandler's Wells, Fargo & Co. catalog numbers])
Wells Fargo president John J. Valentine was excited about Wells Fargo's presence at the upcoming Columbian Exposition. With the 400th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of the new world as the theme of the event, Valentine decided to issue Wells Fargo's first medallic presentation piece to its employees. He arranged for a quantity of uncirculated Columbian half dollars dated 1892 to be offered to company employees, of which there were about 6,000 at the time, according to Dr. Robert Chandler in his fine article "Wells Fargo Medals" in the Journal of the Pacific Coast Numismatic Society of October, 1993. Valentine asked only that employees "apply" for one in writing. In this manner, Valentine was assured that each employee who "applied" for one would receive his or her own special coin. These coins were placed in special presentation coin holders (cardboard), slipped into envelopes with the employee's name and office noted on the outside. Today these coins with complete packaging are very rare and offer a wonderful glimpse of Wells Fargo agent or employee.
The piece offered here is for the most important member of the Zabriskie family, pioneers in Death Valley. Christian Brevort Zabriskie came to Candelaria in March, 1882 from Carson City. In a letter to the Carson Appeal that year, he likened Candelaria to Empire, a small town outside of Carson, and noted that there were "saloons without number." He assumed all were very religious "at least
you would think so from the frequency in which you hear the names of the Diety mentioned," as related in Shamburger's Candelaria. Zabriskie must have remained an agent for at least ten years, though he quickly became part of the famous Pacific Coast Borax operation, working for F.M. "Borax" Smith. He was named superintendent of their local operations which were at Rhodes, Teels, and Columbus marshes, all near Candelaria. At the time, Zabriskie was a mere 22 years old. Francis Marion "Borax" Smith was running the company, and Zabriskie was probably hired to manage the business affairs. Corkill ran the mining production, and Coleman the properties. About 1897 Zabriskie moved to New York to control business matters there, as the company had grown tremendously. In 1914, he took over as head of US operations. The company was controlled by British interests, as it still is today. By 1922, Zabriskie had become very ill. He left in 1933 and died three years later. Zabriskie Point in Death Valley carries his name as an honored memory of his career in Borax. [ref: Cocks; The Tincal Trail, 1984]
While these medals are rare, few carry the provenance of such an important person as Zabriskie.

863. Columbian Souvenir Coin, 1893. This coin comes in original envelope marked "For Mr. C.B. Zabriskie, Agent, Wells Fargo & Company's Express at Candelaria, Nev." The coin itself is housed in a cardboard holder with "Columbian Souvenir Coin, 1892, Commemorative of the World's Columbian Exposition at Chicago, Ill., A.D. 1893, Presented to the Employees of Wells, Fargo & Company." The other side of the holder reads: "A Keepsake from Wells, Fargo & Company, in Token of Regard and in appreciation of faithful services, John J. Valentine, President." The coin itself is round with bead border / (star) UNITED STATE OF AMERICA (star) / picture of Columbus' head / COLUMBIAN HALF DOLLAR // bead border / pic of ship and two globes / 14 92 / around outside is WORLD'S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION CHICAGO 1893. 30 mm. Uncirculated. Est. $200-500

864. Wells Fargo Silver Medal. [WF-2] John J. Valentine, the longtime president of Wells Fargo, was a friend to most of the employees. He had planned a 50 year celebration of Wells Fargo for 1902, and part of it was the creation of a marvelous "semi-centennial" silver medal that was to go to each employee. Valentine, however, got ill and died before the fiftieth anniversary, and much of the wind was taken from the sails of the celebration. The employees were issued one medal each in a silk lined custom fit box. To qualify to receive one of the medals, the employee had to have been on the payroll for at least a year, which eliminated about half of the company's approximate 10,000 employees. The boxes did not contain their names. More than 5000 medals were given away, according to the Wells Fargo Messenger in Feb. 1916. A circular was sent along with each medal noting the commemoration and the date of presentation, March 18, 1902, signed by Dudly Evans, acting president. This is the first specifically designed and created Wells Fargo medal. Est. $300-500

Pony Express Rider's Medal. [WF-3a] The Pony Express Memorial Association re-enacted the 1861 record ride of the Pony Express ride in 1861 that carried President Lincoln's Inaugural address to California. The 1923 ride was made by numerous teams, all trying to break the original record of 7 days, 7 hours made in 1861. Fifty teams left St. Joe Missouri August 31, 1923 carrying messages from eastern governors and the President to the western governors and people. Wells Fargo National Bank announced it would present a gold medal to each member of the winning team. The winning team's last rider was the grandson of Lloyd Tevis, a longtime president of Wells Fargo. They broke the record by 42 hours. Tevis changed horses every ten miles. The bank offered bronze replicas of the gold medal to new depositors of interest bearing time accounts. A soldered ring at the top allowed the piece to be used as a key or watch fob. The medal was designed by Maynard Dixon, one of the most important western artists of his time. We could find no notations of how many were made. These are very rare. The silver medal with the same design by Maynard Dixon is sterling. No specific mention was ever made who received these, though Dr. Chandler suggests they were possibly given to members of the Pony Express Memorail Association. These are extremely rare. The gold medals are exceedingly rare, and it is possible that the Wells Fargo Bank collection contains one of the few known today. These were the last medallic pieces officially struck for Wells Fargo until 1977. [ref: Chandler; PCNS, 1993]
