Printer - Fred Mayer & Co, NY. 7 x 11". Datelined New York. "La Plata, Nevada" is within the embossed seal. The Warren mine was located in the La Plata district on the east slope of the Stillwater Range, Churchill County. A very remote location, even by today's standards. La Plata was the most active mining camp in Churchill County and served as the county seat for a short while. There were three known stamp mills to have been built in the 1860's, but not sure if one of them was by the Warren SMC. (Browne, Lincoln). Trimmed tight at left edge, but not into border. "Tuscarora Dist, Elko County, Nevada" printed at top of certificate. The reverse has 8 assessment rubbers stamps and 3 dividend rubber stamps. Navajo Mining Co was the primary producer in the Tuscarora district. Burchard (1874, p.505) reports that the Independence, Navajo, Belle Isle, North Belle Isle and P & P mines were all owned by the same company. The Navajo had received improvements during 1883, receiving all new machinery necessary to keep the mines water free for at least 3-5 years. The main shaft had been sunk to 650 feet with substantial ore still unmined. The Navajo ten stamp mill was producing $73,000 a month with $200,000 paid out in dividends. In 1883, production from was $430,458, up $110,000 from 1882. Trimmed tight along top edge. Smudge mark at right edge. Pin holes at left edge. Fine. Rare. Est. $200-400

This was historically the most important mine in the district. Placer gold was found as early as 1867. In 1871, the first lode claim was staked and by 1876 bonanza ore was found at the Grand Prize mine. The mine produced $2.5 million by 1890. The Gold Mountain district was discovered in 1866 with the first ore shipped from the Oriental in 1871. Ore was originally processed by arrastras and the district is accredited with about $500,000 in production. There were three main companies working in the district in the 1880's: Oriental, Miller Gold Mountain and State Line. Please see below for Oriental GMC certificate. "Location: Eureka Co, Nevada" printed on certificate. The Palisade Tunnel and group of claims was located about 4 miles west of Palisade along the north side of the Humboldt River next to the Humboldt group. The Pittsburgh and Palisade Tunnel was driven 600 feet to explore for ore in a small vein that outcrops several hundred feet higher on the mountain. Sisenvine was a cigar and tobacco dealer in San Francisco. Daniel Buck was a professional mining secretary. (USGS Bulletin, 1910: Emmons; SF Dir, 1888). Top edge has some chips. The Florida Canyon Mine is located in Pershing County, near Winnemucca. Because of Nevada's Florida Canyon mine, Apollo Gold is also the largest employer and taxpayer in rural Pershing County, Nevada, according to Chapman. The designed capacity for Florida Canyon is to produce 110,000 gold ounces annually. Obviously, the pressure is on to find new reserves to keep the mine operational. The Standard Mine Project, which will be operated in conjunction with its neighbor Florida Canyon, is in the final permitting stage. The mine achieved another safety milestone is 2002 for 3 years, 1,090,629 hours without a lost work day injury.

Apollo recently reported encouraging results from the recently completed Phase I drilling program on its Buffalo Canyon property, adjacent to the Standard Mine project. Vice President for Exploration Richard Nanna said he believes that Buffalo Canyon mineralization is the continuance of the South Pit ore zone of the Standard deposits. Phase II of drilling began a few days ago. As of December 31, 2002, Standard's reserves were reported to contain 318,000 contained ounces of gold. Est. $50-100

It would appear that Weed that this company to be in a good position, but evidently lost his investment as this stock is not cancelled. (Mines Handbook, 1915, p.1349). This telegraph company was headed by Leland Stanford, as stated on the telegraphs. All of the dispatches were sent from San Francisco to Carson City at the Carson City Savings Bank, who had a stock brokerage business. Each telegram is written in code, with some translated at the bottom or along the words. These papers were used to buy and sell mining stock, generally Comstock, Nevada, and eastern California mining companies. The telegraph forms are considered rare. Est. $200-400

Letter sent in advertising cover from Union Depot Hotel. Letter written on Beardsley's Union Depot Hotel, Ogden, Utah, letterhead. Letter written by Ed Bruce. Bruce is responding to his friend Perry who inquires about going to California. It seems from the letter that Bruce (the writer) gets around the country regularly, probably working for the railroad. "...also, what I thought about your coming to California. I will tell you my honest opinion, unless you have something in view don't come." The writer talks about how times have changed and that things are not going well for the "Coast". "Stocks are down to bed rock on all the comstocks and in fact Virginia City is over run with tramps and honest men out of imployment (sic)." Two page letter. Cover has rag right edge. Very fine. Signed by L. A. Sheen, Farmer for Western Shoshones. Content: "Enclosed please find vouchers signed by Mr. Clute for flour purched (sic) of him for Western Shoshone Indians. I did not get off start today for Schell Creek on account of the storm it is the worst of the season. Snow drifts are so xxx so large that is impossible to get through them. I will start tomorrow if possible." Purple ink. 8 x 10". Hamilton was a mining camp that was productive from 1868-1874. The 1970 census lists a population of 3,913 residents (Carlson, p.130).
