The Nevada Silver Co was incorporated in Nevada on Jan 18, 1919 by C. E. Crowley, H. K. Linger and Ed Winn (lawyers and a constable), all directors and officers located and living in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Their resident agent in Nevada was W. H. Leonard in Rawhide, Nevada, whose office was listed as Room 1 of the Post Office building in Rawhide. Rawhide was a very active gold camp in west central Nevada that boomed late 1908-09.

After 1941, probably with only a resident or two hanging on until the Post Office was closed. W. H. Leonard was credited with finding the Nevada Scheelite deposit in 1930, five miles from Rawhide. It is difficult to speculate who was behind the Nevada Silver Co promotion, but it may have been Leonard backed by the Idaho lawyers, who may have been friends of Leonard’s from earlier Rawhide days.

The Nevada Silver Co’s charter was revoked in March, 1932, probably as a result of Leonard’s success at Nevada Scheelite. Ingots from this company do show from time to time in numismatic sales. Attributions range from Virginia City, Lida, Goldfield and Tonopah without any factual reference such as provided here. (Danner, Gabbs Valley, Nevada, 1992: Nevada Corporate Records). This exact same piece has been listed in prior sales and has never been picked up and paid for. Est. $500-800

This is signed by the founder of Simon, Nevada, and discoverer of the small Simon district. The district was first worked in 1879 with small quantities of lead being shipped. The district had a small rush that lasted until around 1923. The Simon Silver Lead Mines Co. was reorganized with the mill being enlarged to handle 250 tons per day. The camp declined by 1927, but minor production continued through the 1930’s. [Paher, p. 439]. Est. $75-150

Hannapah was located 19 miles each of Tonopah. The Hannapah silver mine was discovered in 1902. Steps were taken toward founding a town early in 1906 after a townsite was platted and lots were placed on sale. A well-advertised campaign lured investors to buy a piece of the desert, but little mining actually took place, with the exception of 1908-09, and 1914. 611. Nevada. Nye. Tonopah. Tonopah Gold Coin, 1905. (beaded rim with stars inside of beads) / (pic of Miner with Pick) / 1905 // (beaded rim with wreath within beads) / Tonopah / Gold / Nevada. Rd, gold, 12mm. 0.35 grams. The Tonopah Nevada gold piece from 1905 is often considered as one of the Great Nevada Tokens.

When we published the Nevada Token Book about two decades ago, we did not include the piece because it was not a “good-for”. Nonetheless, it is a true rarity, and John Schilling had heard of the piece, but not seen one and did not have one logged in his extensive card catalog file. We purchased one form John Hamilton in the late 1980’s and subsequently sold it. This may be the same piece, but it is unknown. Perhaps with the publication of this piece, others will surface, but we know of no others at this time. The obverse has the date and a scene with a miner swinging a pick. The scene has some scratches, probably to test the coin for softness as gold. Rocks line the scene at the left, and a shovel sits on the right side. On the reverse is the notation “Tonopah/ Gold/ Nevada”. The obvious suggestion here is that the piece is made from actual Tonopah gold, which cannot be verified at this point. Over the years, we have never found a reference to this piece in our research, though much more is warranted, particularly in looking through 1905 Tonopah newspapers. In 1905 Tonopah was a booming Nevada mining camp. By 1907 there were two jewelers in Tonopah, Frank Golden and George F. Blakeslie. Frank Golden was a wealthy speculator who was also the president of the Nye & Ormsby County Bank in 1907, with offices in Reno, Tonopah, Manhattan and Goldfield. Golden would have been an obvious person to have these gold tokens made and sold through his Tonopah jewelry store. Golden’s banks went broke in the crash of 1907-8 after less than a year of operation, which may have also resulted in the closure of his Tonopah jewelry store, a possible reason that these tokens are so rare. Extremely fine. Est. $2000-4000

623. Nevada. Ormsby. Carson City. Carson City Mint Half Dollar Reverse Die, c.1870-78. Die embossing: United States Of America / (in banner) In God We Trust / (pic of eagle with stars and stripes shield on the chest; three arrows in one claw; branch in other claw) / CC / Half Dol. //. 1.2 lbs, 2.25” tall, 1 5/8” basal diameter. Die face is 31mm. Two short cancellation punches at either side on rim. Right side is 9mm, left side is 11mm. 5mm ding at left upper rim, does not affect beading. Other some dings around rim edge. A nearly perfect lightly cancelled fifty cent half dollar die from the Carson City Mint with the classic “CC” Mint mark. Only nine half dollars were ever made at the Carson City Mint (1870-1878.) It is only lightly cancelled at left and right, rather than the usual prominent “X” chiseled through the center of the die. This is the only Carson City die thus cancelled known. Others on display at both the Carson City Mint Museum and Mackay School of Mines (Keck) Museum collection are cancelled in the usual manner. The dies at Mackay also came from the family of an assayer who may have ended up at the Con-Virginia Mine, one of the two richest mines on the Comstock.

Half dollars were only made at the Carson City mint for a few years. The first year of operation in 1870, the mint produced 54,617 halves. It produced half dollars every year through 1878, with the largest mint run of 1.956 million in 1876. Only 62,000 were produced the last year, 1878. In 1873, the Mint changed the weight of the half dollar from 12.44 grams to 12.50 grams. The new coinage, while still bearing the 1873 date, had arrows added adjacent to the date on the obverse, while the reverse remained the same.

This die comes to us from a Virginia City family with a fabulous story of preservation. An assayer, not related to the mint, moved to Virginia City in the 1930’s. The house the family purchased had this die as a doorstop. Today, one of the daughters still lives in the same house and used the same doorstop, a c.1875 Half Dollar Reverse Die. Extremely rare and a particularly fine specimen. Est. $5000-10,000

The album fastens with a gold metal clasp. Some of the cardboard pages are coming away from binding, and the decorative paper “frames” for the photographs are quite torn and fragile. Meas. 9 x 12.” This is a fascinating pictorial history of some early Nevada families. Est. $275-400

James Nye, Nevada Territorial Governor Checks

More than 20 years ago a small batch of personal papers belonging to James Nye surfaced in Reno. Among them were a group of checks all drawn on the Wells Fargo Bank. These checks were kept by a collector, while the rare Territorial billheads were sold, some of which have since resurfaced in our sales. The checks are a wonderful record of early transactions in Nevada. They are, in fact, some of the earliest records of this sort extant. A significant

portion of the archive is presented here, including some of the very first checks. These are thought to be the first checks related to Nevada. Nye was commissioned March 22, 1861 as Governor of Nevada Territory. On July 11, he issued his proclamation organizing the Territory. Orion Clemens, Sam Clemens’ brother, acted as Territorial Secretary, commissioned March 22, 1861. These checks reflect his personal account which he started in October. Wells Fargo & Co. had established their Express office in Carson City in 1860.

The mines were located near Gold Hill, near the Yellow Jacket and Justus (sic) properties. It was believed than when the existing 164 foot shaft was deepened to around 300 feet that rich ore would be found offering similar profits to that of the mines of the Comstock. 649. Nevada. Storey. Virginia. Views of the Works of the Gould & Curry Silver Mining Co, Virginia City, N. T, c.1863. The title page indicates that the company was incorporated in 1860 with Capital Stock of $2,400,000. The listed officers were: John O. Earl, president; J. C. L. Wadsworth, secretary; W. C. Ralston, treasurer; and Chas. L. Strong, superintendent. Lithographed by Britton & Co, SF. 10 x 13.5”. Original hard boards, with gilt lettering. The book is comprised of 14 lithographs of the Gould & Curry Silver Mining Co Reduction Works. The first plate, which is not numbered, is an overview of the plant. Plate 1: Workmen in the Mine, scene of several miners working underground. Plate 2: Orehouse & Drying Furnaces, large building with several workers with piles of ore about. Plate 3: Engine Room, showing the engine workings. Plate 4: Battery Room, Front View, three workers monitoring the stamps. Plate 5: Battery Room, view of the extensive belt drive for the stamps. Plate 6: Screen Room. Plate 7: Distributing Room, worker monitoring an ore car. Plate 8: Primary Amalgamating Department, three workers in the upper portion of the mill. Plate 9: Secondary Amalgamating Department, several well dressed workers, two men in dress suits. Plate 10: Cleaning Up Department, several workers surrounded by settling vats. Plate 11: Retorting & Smelting Department, two workers pouring ingots. Plate 12: Office & Dwelling, view of the Gould & Curry office building. Plate 13: Showing the interior view & plan of working the mine, cross sectional view of the underground workings. The last plate, not numbered, is a fold out sketch of the 10 x 33”, captioned: Panoramic View, Showing the Relation of the Gould & Curry Works to the Mine and Virginia City, N. T. Wear to spine, some fading of the boards.

This book was given to the shareholders of the Gould & Curry in 1863 to commemorate the opening of the company’s new mill in Six Mile Canyon. The number printed would been a limited number since stock issuance was held tightly. The first print is one of the most important of the group, bird’s eye view of the Gould & Curry Mill at the junction of Six and Seven Mile Canyons, looking

north. This mill was built after the company had consigned its ore to many of the custom mills of the area with mixed recovery results. In 1863, first class ore was still being mined that was extremely rich. In order to cut costs and increase profits, as well as better control of the recovery of precious metals, a new mill was built. Unfortunately, by 1866 the company had nearly run out of near surface high grade ores. The Gould & Curry was one of the few mines on the Comstock that encountered high grade ore at the surface.

The second plate is painstakingly accurate. The timber sets are made in the old style, late to be revolutionized by Phillip Diedenshimer when he developed the square set timber process which interwove the stope, allowing for more mining in the high grade and reducing the need to leave ore in the rock pillars. The men shown are in period attire. Hard hats would not become commonplace until well within the 20th century.

Plate 11 shows the pouring of 1000 ounce ingot, standard size for the Comstock ingots, as witnessed by the many assay archives that survive today.

This is the finest pictorial work on the great Comstock Lode. There are no auction records of this work because of its rarity, nor is it listed in California on Stone. Paher sites it as an important work, and NUC locates only six copies. There are at least three in private hands, of which this is one and perhaps the finest.

Front board has a slight warp. Very fine with minor fraying to the bottom edge of the boards. Extremely rare. Est. $12,000-17,000

One of the finest examples of unique autograph from one of America’s premier entrepreneurs and inventors, William “Bill” Lear. The Check is written in black indelible ink on a round (6” diameter) silver metal (aluminum?) disc with a fluted edge, a gear from one of his famous jets? Surrounding the center hole, from outside in, is: “First National Bank of Nevada Reno Main Office // Pay To Internal Revenue Service - $779,724.15 [signed] Wm. P. Lear // Seven Hundred Seventy Nine Thousand // Seven Hundred Twenty Four & 15/100ths Dollars // Sept. 25, 1970.” On the reverse is written: “For Deposit to the Account of // Internal Revenue Service // Ogden, Utah // N.P. 94-2 // Reno, Nevada // FNB // Paid // September 28, 1970.” The signature has been authenticated as that of Wm. The gear was stored away by the bank for some 20 years as additional support of the actual transaction. William Powell Lear, 1902-1978, was an inventor and industrialist. Born in Hannibal, Mo, he left home at age 16, entered the Navy and studied radio. He held over 150 patents on inventions such as the automatic pilot for planes, eight-track stereo cartridges, and the car radio. Until 1967 he was the owner of the Lear Jet Corporation, pioneers in the manufacturing of small corporate jets, and inventor of the Lear Fan..

663. Nevada. White Pine. Ward City. Ward Miner, February 2, 1877. One of the rarest of the early Nevada newspapers. Only other copies known of are in the Bancroft Library and at the White Pine County Museum. 4pps, Mark W. Musgrove, editor, 8 x 11”.

The paper began publishing in November of 1876, lasting only 5 months, until March 1877. Ward was located 12 miles south of Ely, where today is the Charcoal Ovens State Monument. A rich silver strike was discovered accidentally by workers on Toana-Pioche freight run in March of 1872. The area did not experience a rush until the spring of 1876, but then took off in classic style. A school district was formed by fall of that year, and the Ward Miner began publication. Two smelters and the now famous coke charcoal ovens were built prior to 1877. The camp declined rather quickly by late in 1878, but mining continued, off and on, until 1960. (Paher, p.257-259). Three professional tape repairs hold together the two pages of the newspaper. Otherwise, the paper is in Very Fine condition. Extremely Rare. Est. $200-400
