The terrain is correct for Aurora, including the flora, all pinion pine. The possibility exists that Mr. C. Chesco was the superintendent, and the mine name may have been different. All are in excellent condition with great clarity and contrast. Est. $350-500

431. Esmeralda. Aurora. Deed of Mining Claim, dated 1862. This deed conveys ownership in one of the first claims at Aurora from Joseph Clark of Virginia City, NV., to Charles Hasmer of San Francisco. It was recorded at the request of John Hawkins. The claims were known as the Esmeralda Lode and Company No. 2. , in the Monitor Mining District of the County of Mono. The claims were located by J. D. Marks, J Braudy Bary, and others in July 1862. Two Pages. Has California embossed seal. Printed in black ink on light blue deed paper. The writing is in black ink. Clark was a cousin of George Hearst. Joe Clark was one of the first locators on the Comstock, staking part of the Gould & Curry claim. Clark came to Virginia City from Grass Valley in June, 1859 with the first group of men who heard about the discovery from the assays done in Ott’s Assay Office in Nevada City. He came west to the California Gold Rush, but separately from George. Once in California, Joe and one (Jacob) or two brothers joined up with George Hearst for mining at Jackass Gulch near Placerville. Unsuccessful, the group headed to Nevada City to try their luck, though they seem to have sort of taken different paths. The three filed a claim in Nevada County in 1858 along with Rufus Shoemaker. They staked a number of claims in this area from 1858-1859. Another of Hearst’s partners in Nevada City was William Chollar, locator of the famous Chollar mine in Virginia City. When Joe Clark headed to the mountains in Utah Territory, there were no trails. He and the rest of town headed to what would become Virginia City. Once there about late June, the big discoveries were made, nearly all on the same day. Clark became a partner of Abe Curry, forming what would later become part of the famously rich Gould & Curry mine, just south of Comstock, McLaughlin & Penrod’s claim, the Ophir. This is the first example of a Clark autograph we have handled. Folds. Tearing at the ends of the folds. Size 8 ½” x 14”. Ex. Fine. [ref: FH Biography of George Hearst, unpublished] Very Rare. Est. $400-800

432. Esmeralda. Aurora. Mining Deed. December 1, 1860. Early, three page, handwritten indenture transferring ownership of mining claim from Augustus Bronson of Tulare County to Andrew Dott of San Francisco. Claim was sold for the sum of one thousand dollars. Property transferred is described as “an undivided interest of twenty feet of mining ground - known as the first north extension of the Esmeralda Lode.” Mr. Bronson in describing the claim states that the “property is situated in the Esmeralda District, in the county of Carson, Territory of Utah, or in the County of Calaveras, State of California” This document illustrates well the problem of the location of the Esmeralda district. Was it in Utah Territory on the Nevada side, or in California? It would not be straightened out until 1862-3. The indenture was notarized by P.B. Cornwall, 94 Merchant St., San Francisco. The claim was first located by Mr. Bronson and others August 30, 1860 and recorded September 1, 1860 in book “A” of the records of the Esmeralda District. This Deed was drafted only three months after the first discovery in Esmeralda. The property was among the very first discoveries and among the first to become incorporated, raising public money through stock offering for exploration and production. We have only handled one or two Esmeralda documents this early in the past twenty five years. Est. $200-400 (no illustration)

This issued originally sold for 50 cents. 11 x 15.5”. A quick preview of this piece shows that the space alotted is inadequate for a full description. There are many one page advertisements placed by different mining companies and stock brokers, all touting their properties. In conjunction with the ads and other articles, are several printed photographs, many are images that we have seen as postcards. There are articles outlining the history and events of Goldfield with many photographs. There are also indepth articles about the major mining companies with biographies of the officers or discoverers and other important people. The biographies alone would make this piece, but the photographs, mining ads and other items push to the fantastic. 467. Esmeralda. Goldfield. Patent Papers of John Boesch, 1911-1928. It seems that John Boesch was an inventor of practical hardware. We have seen John Boesch’s name appear several times in lots from Goldfield, especially regarding mining stock transactions and others related items. In 1911, Boesch received a patent on a hose coupler. From the specification schematics, this is very close, if not the same, still used on high pressure hoses such as those used for pumping concrete. Also, in 1928, Boesch received patents on a pry bar/nail puller. There are also patents for these hardware from Canada and England. This may explain the heavy investment in mining companies of Goldfield during the late 1920’s and early 1930’s when the mining industry was down. All very fine. Est. $200-300

Printer - Goes. 5.5 x 10”. &#x201CMines At Bullfrog, Nevada” printed in red block letter underprint. Minor creases at edges. Datelined Goldfield, Nev. The Gold Bar is a gold deposit on the outskirts of the Bullfrog district to the northwest, about 4 miles out of Rhyolite. It was discovered in 1904, and by 1907, had a shaft 350 feet deep. A mill was built and production began. Meanwhile, a neighboring property, the Homestake, had began construction of a huge mill but it was found that some of their ore was on Gold Bar property. Ensuing lawsuits slowed production of both companies and local newspapers incorrectly called both shyster promotions. Both fell victims of financial panics that followed the failure of the Sullivan Trust Co in Goldfield. The news writers were wrong about the shyster labels. The engineers of both mines had diligently driven crosscuts looking for high grade ores. Some was found in both mines. More so in the Homestake, but the Gold Bar just missed it - it was right under the hoist, as found by Fred Holabird, in 1986, which resulted in an open pit mine. Very fine. Est. $75-150

Beautiful, very clear vignette of two miners operating a hydraulic drill in an underground mining scene. 6” x 9 ¾”. Bullfrog MC owned property immediately north of the Original Bullfrog, as well as groups of claims all over the district. Their company appears to have been more of a land play than a true mine, but they did hold key property on Bullfrog hill, though the production was minor. They were not listed in the Shearer directory. Pittman was a Nevada Senator and successful mining man/investor in the Tonopah, Goldfield, and Bullfrog rushes. Folds, small marks left by rusty paper clips along top edge. Xf. Ex. rare. A few years ago the Park Service ordered all the old mine workings at Bullfrog permanently closed, and sealed the adits and filled in the shafts. Unfortunately, this removes the tremendous educational opportunities that were present there for this type of ore deposit. We spent a considerable amount there with all our geologists learning the detailed geology and ore forming processes, very helpful in the region.-fh. Est. $150-300

563. Nye. Bullfrog. Original Bullfrog Mines Syndicate. Cert. #1188. Incorporated in the Territory of Arizona. Issued to Jos. B. Toplitz for 100 shares in 1905. Signed by president John E. Lutz and secretary. The Original Bullfrog Mines Syndicate held the original Bullfrog mine on “Bullfrog Mountain”. I used quotes because it is no more than a hill about 100’ above the Bullfrog campsite off the west flank of the hill. It was known for its unusual blue-green minerals in quartz with native gold. Ore specimens were sent to Tiffany’s in New York for lapidary work, out of which a number of fobs were made. A small test open pit mine was begun in the 1980’s, but proved unsuccessful due to quartz processing. There was a 50,000 ounce reserve in place in the late 80’s, but it may have become sub economic under the present conditions. This is the more rare of the two Original Bullfrog, though not as attractive as the other which features an illustration of a fat frog in the underprint. Vignette of mine and mill operations at water’s edge, flanked by two smaller vignettes of underground mining scenes. Green border and seal. Printer not noted. Datelined S.F., Cal. Datelined Goldfield, Nev. Green border with large green bullfrog printed at center. Folds, Uncancelled. This is the first mine discovered at Bullfrog by Shorty Harris in August 1904. Shorty sold his share in the mine for a measly $100 when he was in a blinding drunk. His partner pitched his into this new company. Two years later, this mine and the Montgomery Shoshone were the only two to have reported shipping ore, but the company died by mid 1907, according to Richard Lingenfelter in Death Valley and the Amargosa. In fact, the ore occurred in a relatively thin zone directly related to a nearly horizontal fault separating some young rocks that hosted the deposit, from very old Cambrian sediments. The ore only occurred in the younger rocks, so exploration had to occur laterally. Shorty and his partner hadn’t staked enough ground. Years later, Pete Galli pulled the dumps and mined a shallow test open pit for a heap leach operation. The dumps were not crushed, and most of the values stayed in the pile as a result. By the time we got around to the deposit, a number of drill holes had pretty well defined the deposit, indicating that there were only about 50,000 ounces of gold remaining. This is the most popular by far of the Bullfrog stock certificates, though it is not particularly rare. We get about one per year. Est. $400-600

He hit it big on the borax mines of the southwest, selling out his interests to a British company. After a number of years, he tried to enter the real estate and railroad businesses in the California Bay area, only to get bamboozled out of his money by the Realty Syndicate. He returned to mining, his love, and his expertise. He became president of the West End, and led them to many years of profitable mining, churning out about $15 million in precious metals, and headed up other companies along the way. Dennis Searles is probably John Searles son, another Borax pioneer in California and Nevada, and longtime associate of Borax Smith. Probably cousin of Fred Searles Jr., one-time president of Newmont. Benjamin Franklin Edwards was a long time friend of Smith’s, having met him in his early mining days at Candelaria. As Edwards rose in business, becoming a banker in Candelaria, Smith used him to manage some of his affairs. He stayed on as Smith’s right hand man for many years. (ref: Hildebrand, C&C). Sharon had loaned the new State of Nevada the $7200 to pay the interest on the state bonds issued January 4, 1865. Nevada had no money to pay the interest on the bonds, and would possibly have gone bankrupt without Sharon’s help. The interest was payable in August, 1865 to bondholders. The State was paying Sharon in October at the rate of 1.5% per month interest. Signed by E. Rhoades as State Treasurer. Five revenue stamps attached. Two imperf brown $1 Mortgage uncut and one of the same below. One 50 cent blue Probate of Will below, and one 10 cent blue Bill of Lading at upper right of stamp group. A) Virginia City- Gold Hill. Beals’ Branch Gallery/ Gold Hill, NA (very rare abbreviation of Nevada. This is probably a territorial imprint); Beals’ Branch Gallery, Gold Hill, Nev.; and E. Hurd, Hurd’s Palace of Art, 140 South C Street, Virginia, Nevada. Albert Beals was born in Connecticut in 1821. In 1844 he opened a daguerreian gallery in Charleston, South Carolina. In 1846 he moved to New York City with a gallery there, which he ran through at least 1854. Nothing was heard of Beals again until 1863 when he opened his photo gallery in Gold Hill, Nevada Territory. He was a dentist at the same time. His brother Henry Beals had a gallery in Sacramento. He ran the Gold Hill photo shop through 1880. In 1875 he opened another gallery in Virginia City with a partner. He was also busy prospecting and had the mining bug. B.) Abell, Grass Valley (c1872-1876), three photos, all children. C) San Francisco. Silas Selleck (photo of Prescott Sawyer and Houghton Sawyer), “Next Wells Fargo & Co.”. Selleck worked for Matthew Brady, Muybridge, and other great photographers of the period. His SF gallery opened in 1861. Bayley & Cramer’s Fine Art Gallery (1865-1868), J. T. Silva; and two tin types, one from W. Insco Williams, photographer, and the other unidentified. All of these were together, leaving me to suspect that Williams was an early San Francisco photographer, though there is no mention of him in Palmquist. Another W. I. Williams is mentioned in Mautz, but thirty years too late. [ref: Palmquist and Kailbourn; Pioneer Photographers of the Far West.] Est. $100-300

Gold Hill Daily News Facsimile Territorial Mining Stock Certificate. 1863. &#x201CThis certifies that Lynch & Mundall are now prepared to print certificates of mining stock…” Facsimile signatures of Lynch as president and Mundall as secretary are in the appropriate places. The piece is datelined October 12, 1863, Gold Hill. Vignette of lady in a lake in mountainous setting at top center, with a liberty allegorical figure at left. Very attractive pink underprint in a safety pattern. The certificate is entirely printed in purple except the name “Daily News” at top and “certificate of Mining Stock” in the center both of which are printed in blue. At left edge along the margin is some damage, with a thin strip of paper missing. Please refer to the photo. Along the right edge are a few tiny tears of no great consequence. This is a truly wonderful advertising piece. The date on the certificate is the date the first paper was published, which was the first paper published in Gold Hill. Lynch and his stepson Mundall, were former publishers of the Placer Courier at Forest Hill, California, according to Lingenfelter and Gash in The Newspapers of Nevada,1984 (A must reference work for the western historian.) They hired Hiram Hawkins to be the editor, and housed the business in the former Wells Fargo brick building. The paper was extre, ely successful. In April, 1866, Lynch bought out Mundell after Hawkins took a job with the US Consul. Mundell had other problems and committed suicide by an overdose of morphine two years later. Alf Doten was hired as editor in November, 1867. He is perhaps best known today by his voluminous journals, which were published about 15 years ago. Doten bought the paper from Lynch’s widow after his demise. This is the only time we have handled this piece and were unaware of its existence prior. Est. $500-1000

The Lady Bryan was the first claim filed, and ended up as the richest mine in the district. In the 1980’s, Alhambra Mines began an open pit operation there. In 1988, we took over the bankrupt remains of the company and continued to mine the Lady Bryan pit. We made a new discovery at the Bonanza, about 3000 feet east, which became a pit about 1993, all mined out today. A small pit immediately north of the Bryan that was mined circa 1920-50 was called the Berry pit, perhaps named after Polin Berry, or another of his family. While there was still a bit of ore there today, the stripping ratio was a bit high, so it was left alone for a future date.-fh Extremely rare. Est. $700-1000

677. Storey. Virginia. Report to the Directors and stockholders of the Mexican G&SMC, Union Consol. MC, Savage G&SMC, Hale & Norcross MC, and the Julia Consol. MC Being a Brief Statement of the Situation on the Comstock the methods of mining for assessments and the intentional mismanagement of the middle and north end mines; By a Clique of six crooked brokers composed of A. F. Coffin, Herman Zadig, B. F. Shaw, J. Berghauser, W. B. Bannan, and W. H. Moise showing the reasons that mine there cannot now be other than unprofitable, together with an appeal to all stockholders in the middle and north end mines to deal with honest brokers instead of the crooks. By Whitman Symmes, superintendent of the Mexican Mine, 1913, 184pp. Top of soft bound cover has been cut off and name written in ink at left margin erased. This remarkable work is perhaps one of the most important of the modern Comstock mining era. It firmly describes, in great detail, how the inner workings of a few men in control of too many mines, and their critical drainage company, the Comstock pumping association, can completely control the production, non-production, and therefore the profitability of the Comstock. The end result is that these men controlled the stock market, both in management, and through their respective brokerage firms., mostly by selling the stock short…the same as betting on the house to win in a crap game. Symmes exposed a vastly corrupt scheme, today loaded with what we now call “conflicts of interest” The lengthy work by Symmes documents in detail the many conflicts of interest that led to huge wastes in money spending and inept management based not on sound mining and business principals, but on a moneymaking scheme of a handful of brokers and mine presidents with their own special interests. This is a very rare and important work. Est. $400-600

Vignette of Native American atop hilltop over looking city and industry. Small vignette of underground mining scene at bottom center. Green border. Printed by the National BNC., NY. 8” x 12”. This certificate was issued at the time Sutro sold out, having become fed up with the politics on the Comstock. After signing an agreement granting Sutro a royalty on any ores shipped through the tunnel and on the provisions, the mining companies backed out, choosing to litigate their interests in court. Though the tunnel had begun construction prior to 1870, its completion in 1877 came after the big Crown Point and Con Virginia bonanzas, and the mine interests no longer wanted to share their profits with anyone else. He assures Smith that Mrs. Fields will vote for him, as Dean saved the day for her in furnishing the bread for Smith, Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Horn. He also relates that he nursed 2 of Mrs. Rosevear’s sisters until they died of diphtheria when everyone else ran away and that he saved the life of her sister now working in the hospital. He says Mrs. Rosevear and others are “much attached to him” and will surely vote for a friend of his. On a personal note, he talks about the skunk he killed with a trap.
