Santa Barbara County
We proudly present the following outstanding Santa Barbara area token collection from a California gentleman. We have extensively researched our western directories on these merchants and have included the information we found with each description. We used the 1880, 1885, 1886, 1888, 1890, 1894, 1896 directories by various publishers. Many of these tokens were previously unknown.

Santa Barbara. Guadalupe
Guadalupe was one of the very early towns and settlements in Southern California. It was noted as early as 1830. A post Office was established in 1872. It remained a small agricultural community, about 75-80 miles from Santa Barbara, with a population of just 100 in 1880, 400 in 1894, with only a few more by 1900. Towns this small rarely had tokens manufactured for their small businesses, but at least three did so over an approximate 20 year period, perhaps trying to get customers to come back. Tokens from Guadalupe are very rare. Previously, only the Commercial Hotel piece was known to collectors. [Gudde, California Place Names, 1969]

329. Santa Barbara. (Guadalupe). E. Bontadelli's/ GF/ One/ Drink// (blank). Incuse. SC (8), br, vf/ dent (punch) in center. Unlisted in Kappan or Rulau. Bontadelli ran a saloon in Guadalupe in 1894. The saloon was a typical small town saloon, rated by credit agencies as the contents and business worth only about $1000. His business does not appear to have started until after 1890. The town was so small that it was not listed in the 1895 Merchantile Guide for California, nor a few other California directories directly following that period. Est. $200-400

Santa Barbara. Los Alamos
Los Alamos was a small community so small that it is not listed in Gudde's California Place Names or Hart's California Companion. The community was listed in western directories at least as early as 1880. In 1894 it had a population of 400, similar to Guadalupe. It is 50 miles south of San Luis Obispo on the Pacific Coast Railway back in 1895. Tokens from Los Alamos were previously unknown to collectors. None are listed by Kappan or Rulau.

333. Santa Barbara. Los Alamos. FAKE. Counterfeit. Palm/ Saloon/ Los/ Alamos/ Cal.// One/ Drink. RD, br, 21mm, f/ rough, crude print. Incuse. When I originally wrote up this piece, I assumed it was real. It was sold to a very advanced collector as authentic. However, upon detailed examination under our microscope, I am rendering the following opinion: This token is unmistakably a fake. The letters punched on the obverse were the first punched. They penetrated a rust and oxidation pattern that pre-existed. When the reverse was punched, it broke the surface of the obverse, creating micro cracks in the surface, including through the lettering, which might lead one to render an opinion of original. However, when viewing the reverse, the punches are unmistakably fresh, placed over the top of the oxidation and corrosion. The pressure from these punches caused the cracks on the obverse. This piece is a fake.
Originally, I had written the following, which we offer for reference only: "Saloons were a rare breed in Los Alamos. A. G. Martinez had a saloon there that also sold liquor over the counter as early as 1880, lasting through at least 1895. One of the few other saloons was run by F. Ontiveras about 1888. Neither establishment used the saloon name in any of the directories, which was typical of the times." Estimated as an example of a fake only. Est. $10-25

334. Santa Barbara. (Los Alamos). G. Grifingher// GF/ 1/ Drink. Rd, br, 21mm, vf, dark toned from reaction with dirt. Ran the Bar, c1908. Est. $100-300

339. Santa Barbara. Santa Barbara. F.V. Orella/ Santa Barbara// GF/ 12 1/2¢/ Cigar. Oct, br, 26mm, xf/ some black spots on obverse. Orella ran a cigar store starting about 1890at 715 State Street. It was a small business, K96 in Kappan, but unlisted in Rulau. Est. $50-100

340. Santa Barbara. Santa Barbara. Frank Loustalot/ Santa/ Barbara//GF/ 25/ ¢/ IT. Rd, br, 23mm, xf. Frank Loustalot ran a saloon that also sold wines and liquors and cigars on the corner of Cercetta and Anacapa streets as early as 1894, perhaps as early as 1890. It was no ordinary saloon. The business was valued at $10,000-$15,000 then, which was a princely sum, about 5 to 7 times larger than the regular saloon, indicating that it might have been one of the largest and most popular saloons in Santa Barbara. Certainly very few others in any western towns could compare. By 1911 it had moved to 15 E. Haley. This token is not listed in Kappan nor Rulau, and is an important nineteenth century southern California token discovery. Santa Barbara. San Miguel Island
San Miguel Island is off the coast of Santa Barbara in the Channel Islands. It is the northern most island in a chain of about four islands. It was discovered by famous Spanish explorer Cabrillo, and his body is thought to have been buried there. The island has a fascinating history. The island was inadvertently not included in the various drafts of the Guadalupe-Hidalgo Treaty of 1848. Private interests soon discovered the error. The first long term resident was George Nidever who moved there about 1850, with title to half the island purchased at a Sheriff's sale. He brought with him 6000 sheep, 125 cattle, 25 horses. After several owners of the same parcel, William G. Waters became the owner in 1887. Waters was a civil war veteran who became a printer, fell in love with San Miguel, and thus became a rancher by default. In 1897 he formed the San Miguel Island Co. with a group of investors. In 1908, because of a suit brought by Robert Brooks, one Waters' investors, the Federal Government brought another suit claiming ownership. They took over, allowing a "lease" to Brooks. Lester reported in The Legendary King of San Miguel (1975) that a man named John Russell built a ranch house in 1906. Whether he owned the lease or simply worked for Brooks, or Waters, is unknown. We cannot clarify this confusion without further research.
Herb and Elizabeth Lester arrived on the island about 1930. They carried on the business of sheep. In an old tradition, a few workers would come to the island from Santa Cruz Island a few times a year to sheer sheep, a job lasting about two weeks. Elizabeth Lester wrote: "Sparkling competition existed among the shearers, recognized and rewarded by the distribution of a token for each sheep sheared. These small metal tokens, pierced for hanging, were dispensed by Herbie and carried by the men on spikes, and at the end of the day were turned in for currency. Captain Waters had inaugurated the custom and at the time a nickel was paid for each sheared sheep, and a dime for a ram. With the eventual abandonment of the sheep ranch and San Miguel itself for private enterprise, these tokens have become prized collector pieces, being an obsolete token of 'California Currency.'"
Since the tokens originated with Waters, their origin certainly predates 1906, and probably post dates 1897, the date of formation of the San Miguel Island Co. The tokens may have had a continued use under Brooks. Lester was a collector, and undoubtedly used the tokens out of nostalgia. He had a personal museum of relics, mostly from shipwrecks around the island.
Kappan, in California Trade Tokens, incorrectly listed the piece as dating from 1930, based on an article in the Numismatist, which incorrectly shows the date that Lester was first on San Miguel island, not the date the tokens were used, nor information about the original merchant, Waters. These two very important errors were not known to Kappan at the time. The token is rare, with probably less than 15 pieces known. There are no ten cent tokens known today. There is a companion piece (of sorts) from Santa Cruz Island, used for the same purpose, which is slightly more common.

Santa Ynez
The Santa Ynez tokens listed here are rare. Their presence was not known until 1996, when a safe from one of the Santa Ynez pioneer families was opened. According to an article in the Santa Barbara News Press in 1996, Frank Knight came to the Santa Ynez Valley about 1894. He bought a general store from George Allenstein about 1910, after serving as a deputy Marshall. There are potential historical accuracy problems with the article however, since by 1911, Allenstein was not listed in Santa Ynez as a resident or merchant in California directories. Curiously, neither was Knight. The town had a population of 500. Neither is listed in the 1895 directory, either. Both may have avoided the directory merchants for any number of reasons. In a town of 500, only about 20 merchants were listed in 1911, which might indicate a "problem" to any competent researcher. I suspect written inquiries from directory compilers went unanswered.
When the safe was opened, a small box of tokens was found. Many of the tokens were from G. A. Ilenstine. It is my opinion that G.A. Ilenstine was, in fact, George Allenstein. Note the extreme similarity in spelling. The die manufacturer clearly misinterpreted a handwritten Allenstein for A. Ilenstine. The tokens were probably housed in the safe because of the mistake in spelling. There are no other similar names in the directories, and this mistake is far more than a coincidence in merchants. They are one in the same.
The article stated that there were $54 in tokens found, but did not publish a list of the contents of the box making up that amount. Even today, rumors exist about this "hoard." There was no "hoard." Here are the exact totals of what was found. The majority of pieces are tightly held.

There are nowhere enough pieces to satisfy California collectors, with the possible exception of the Ilenstine 50 cent, 31mm piece. More importantly, this archive represents a rare view of an intact trove of tokens actually used during the period 1894-1910 in a small California community. The tokens offered here are all from this archive, and represent the best of those found.
