The following two silver railroad passes are an addendum to the printed catalog. This important and historic offering represents the first time in history to our knowledge that the three different Colorado “silver ingot” railroad passes have been offered at one time. Both of these passes were made by Diamond Palace Jewelers in Denver, Colorado.

A1. The 1889 Silverton Railroad Silver Pass

This silver pass is one of three different Colorado silver annual railroad passes. They are all extremely rare. This pass is for the Silverton Railroad, 1889, signed by Otto Mears. It was issued to Colgate (C. D.) Hoyt (b1849 Ohio), a tremendously important railroad official. He was a director of the Union Pacific Railroad, First V. P. of the Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railway, a Director of the Oregon & transcontinental Co. and other rail lines.
The Silverton Railroad ran from Ouray to Silverton. It was chartered in 1887, and opened in 1889, the year this silver pass was issued. Famous railroad man Otto Mears was the president. There are probably about five of these passes extant, though an exact count is nearly impossible because the diversity in collectors seeking these rare passes that are a form of silver ingots. This pass weighs 1.12 troy ounces. [ref: Busbey; Biographical  Directory of Railway Officials of America, 1896. Poors Manual of Railroads; 1894.]  $14,500

A2. The 1890 Silverton Railroad Pass

This is the rarest of the three wonderful silver Colorado railroad passes. No other state in the Union has such elaborate passes, certainly none made in precious metals. This pass is unlike the other two wallet “silver ingot” passes. It was worn as a fob, probably meant to be placed on the watch chain over the vest, such that it was always visible to railroad employees.
This is pass #581 presented to J. W. Winkfield, and again signed by Railroad magnate Otto Mears. Winkfield (b1843 Pennsylvania) was a longtime Colorado resident. In 1880 he was managing a hotel in Rico, a silver mining camp near Silverton. $15,500

A23. Broadside advertising Sunday excursions on the steamer George Law (later SS Central America)

This wonderful, original broadside appears to date from the 1852 to 1854 period. After Dec of 1854 the captains of the SS George Law were Captain Fox, Captain Gray and finally Captain Herndon, who also later stewarded the SS Central America. Not much is known about Captain A.E. Shaw.  The printer of this broadside, Francis Hart of New York, made it for public viewing probably in about 1852 or 1853. The wonderfully detailed woodblock print that stretches from side to side represents the SS George Law and hence the SS Central America, but fine details in the print that the Hart attempted to remove in 1852 indicate that the woodblock was originally made for an image of the SS Alida. The Alida was built in New York in 1847 and was of a similar size to the SS Central America. The author believes this to be the only known period broadside of the SS Central America in existence. A must-have for the complete collection of important Gold Rush memorabilia. $15,000
