Denver. Denver. National Mining & Industrial Expo, 1882. Colorado put on this exposition during the heat of the Leadville silver boom, the largest metals rush since the Comstock. The event was conceived in January, 1882, originally called the Denver Mining Exposition. They proposed to start a public company with an issuance of $200,000 in stock. $150,000 was to go for the construction of a beautiful exhibition hall on 40 acres in rural Denver designed by Edbrooks & Burnham similar to the National Museum in Washington (Smithsonian). They anticipated 74,000 square feet of show space and another 80,000 square feet of gallery. Denver subscribed to $75,000 of the cost, Eastern interests, headed by the New York Mining Exchange, took approximately $100,000, and local interests took the other $25,000. The acting president of the group was the Director of the Denver Branch Mint, H. Silver, the secretary was the former Western Union Manager S. T. Armstrong, and H. D. Perky was general manager. Others with vested financial interests were H. Tabor, W. Loveland, and F. Pitkin, the Governor of Colorado. [ref: Engineering & Mining Journal, 1882, pp54, 165, 193.] The Colorado mining men sought financing in New York because most of their properties had been financed through public companies founded in New York and Philadelphia, opposite of those on the Comstock and California, which were mostly funded out of San Francisco. These medals are all rare. The condition of the two smaller medals is exemplary.

The Pedley-Ryan Silver Rounds.
Pedley-Ryan was an investment form in Denver who decided that silver was a great way to speculate. By producing thousands of silver rounds, they assumed that the market value would increase when silver rose to the expected historical ratio of 16:1. They even marketed the blanks to others, including the Sterling Investment firm in Reno, Nevada and at least one merchant in Denver. P-R made five types overall from the blank rounds and one embossed coin. The venture was not successful. They got out of the silver market and switched to oil, becoming the Cow Gulch Oil Co.
