Nevada. Storey. Gold Hill. Gold Hill Fire Department Lithograph, 1867. 23” tall x 28” long, fancy silver wash frame, double matted with light blue and red mats. Edges of the litho are obscured. Professionally framed, sealed on the reverse. The litho has been hand colored. It is a classic fire department litho, showing scenes of the Gold Hill fire Department buildings (Yellow Jacket Engine Co., Lincoln House, and the Liberty Engine Co.), rescue operations, fire fighting scenes, fire engines and fire fighters. A bird’s eye view of Gold Hill is present in the bottom center flanked by floral branches and fire department accoutrements. The lithograph shows H. H. Flagg’s name at the top, elected as a delegate to the Yellow Jacket Co. on May 22, 1867. This litho has been professionally restored by Don Myers, one of California’s finest historical document restoration experts. Mr. Myers’ specialty was the repair of historical philatelic (postal) covers and documents. Restoration: The piece had four significant creases, all vertical, at approximate one quarter intervals, consistent with a crushed roll. A lengthy tear horizontally just below the center has been so well restored that it is nearly invisible. Several small chips were missing from the original, and these have been skillfully filled in and replaced. Color has been added where original color has faded. It appears that the membership information has been filled in originally. This ink appears severely faded, and new ink has been superimposed on top of the old. This is particularly visible under the “Flagg” and “Yellow”. However, final proof can only lie in forensic ink tests. We can only state our observations. We strongly urge personal inspection of the piece. It is a true rarity, deserving of the quality of restoration received. H. H. Flagg was a long-time Gold Hill resident, banker, broker and businessman. His estate sold long ago, and at least one other of his personal papers is in this sale, the Cleveland mining stock certificate from Gold Hill, 1863. Flagg was an early resident of Gold Hill (at least as far back as 1862). As a banker, he was a prominent businessman. He served on the first Water Company Board in early 1863 and was elected a State Senator the same year. He was president of the Board of Trustees of Gold Hill in 1863. He owned considerable property, and one business block bore his name “Flagg’s block.” Others, perhaps more familiar, included “Maynard’s Block.” Unfortunately, the Gold Hill Fire Department is not mentioned in the 1863 Directory, though the Virginia Fire Department is mentioned in great detail. (Nor is it mentioned in Angel’s History of Nevada, 1883, and most of the other references on the Comstock either.) (Flagg was listed in the 1862 and 1863 Kelley Territorial directories, but his occupation was never stated.). In 1868 Flagg was a stock broker in Gold Hill and made trades for the likes of Alf Doten, editor of the Gold Hill News. He later bought part interest in the Knickerbocker Mine at Gold Hill in 1871. Flagg’s bank and brokerage business was suspended in February, 1872. The company was short on stock in the Savage and Gould & Curry, causing bankruptcy. Flagg’s friends rallied support in an attempt to keep him from complete bankruptcy. Doten never mentioned Flagg again in his diaries. This is an outstanding piece. Est. $1500-3000 688. No Lot. 689. Nevada. Storey. Gold Hill. Cleveland Gold & Silver Mining Co. Cert #14. Incorporated in 1863. Issued to H. H. Flagg for ten shares in 1866. Signed by H. H. Flagg president and O. H. Platt secretary. Vignette of a cabin with a horse drawn wagon in front and two men. Black border. Uncancelled. Printer - Town & Bacon, SF. 4 x 9”. Datelined Gold Hill. 25 cent revenue at left edge. H. H. Flagg was a California ‘49er from Boston. In 1852 he was in Yuba County on the Bear River, where he apparently worked through about 1857. He then moved to Nevada City, running a livery stable under the name Flagg & Chandler. He was involved with several mining companies there and was a political force, elected to the Board of Trustees for Nevada City in 1859 and again in 1861. Shortly after that, after nearly everyone in Nevada City had left for the Comstock in 1859, Flagg was two years on their tail, but went to Gold Hill in late 1861 or early 1862. In Gold Hill, Flagg was an early resident, banker, broker and businessman of Gold Hill. He served on the first Water Company Board in early 1863, was elected a State Senator the same year. Flagg was listed in the 1862 and 1863 Territorial directories, but his occupation was never stated. He was president of the Board of Trustees of Gold Hill in 1863. Flagg owned considerable property, and one business block bore his name “Flagg’s block.” Others, perhaps more familiar, included “Maynard’s Block.” In 1868 Flagg was a stock broker in Gold Hill and made trades for the likes of Alf Doten, editor of the Gold Hill News. Later, in 1871, he bought part interest in the Knickerbocker Mine at Gold Hill. Flagg’s bank and brokerage business was suspended in February, 1872. The company was short on stock in the Savage and Gould & Curry, causing bankruptcy. Flagg’s friends rallied support in an attempt to keep him from complete bankruptcy. Doten never mentioned Flagg again in his diaries, suggesting Flagg’s business ventures failed completely. The Cleveland was never a producer, nor was it listed as a claim or mine in Becker’s 1883 Atlas and text on the Geology of the Comstock Mines. Probably just a prospect. Extremely fine. Signed by John Robertson, David Wilson and Alex Calder. No vignette, no border. Uncancelled. Printer not noted. 8 x 8”. Datelined London. “Washoe County, Nevada Territory, USA” printed at top. The company got its start in 1862. In their prospectus is the statement “where capital is judiciously employed failure is impossible as the sources of wealth themselves are inexhaustible.” The company constructed 7.5 miles of canal “capable of carrying the whole Truckee River, a 20,000 pound (English monetary pound) 20 stamp mil and a large debt.” The mill was listed by Stretch in his massive List of Mills in 1865, but it was reported not running. From our unofficial observations, there was a ditch run from the Comstock down Lousetown Creek to the Truckee River where there was ready and ample supple of water. Washoe United probably tried to run the mill as a custom mill, but the charges of hauling ores from Virginia City to the Truckee River, about 16 miles, versus taking ores to the Carson River, about 7 miles, probably killed the enterprise. (Stretch, Spence). One again, “the cart before the horse” as in no ore, no profit, killed the company. This may have been the first British effort into a Nevada mining enterprise. Rare. Est. $40-80 756. Nevada. White Pine. Eberhardt. Eberhardt & Aurora Mining Co Assay Office Certificate, 1878. A single assay sheet from the Assay Office of the Eberhardt & Aurora MC dated Nov 19, 1878. Signed by Frank Hallwill assayer. 26 samples were run that day with values ranging from $12-36 silver per ton. 8 x 14”. The Eberhardt & Aurora MC owned the Eberhardt mine, located on Treasure Hill, that was one the major producers in the Treasure Hill district. The ore was so rich at the surface the mining was similar to a rock quarry (Raymond, 1870). The company had a number of shafts and employed 80 men. British investment came in 1869 , when Colonel O’Conner and Mer. Wearne left London for the White Pine rush. They, and others, were well heeled and began the financing of White Pine mines and others. California and Nevada amines were more popular with British investors than any others in the States. This company was formed when a group of London stock brokers and businessmen led by the assayer of the Royal Mine, E. Risdale, got an option on the Eberhardt in 1870. The issued sold out in 2 days. Company produced $4 million. Chip missing from lower right, crease at upper left. One brown stain at left edge. Fine to very fine. Rare. Est. $50-100 757. Nevada. White Pine. Ely. Cons Coppermines Co. Cert. #B1531. Incorporated in Delaware, 1913. Issued to H. C. Warren, for 40 shares. Signed by J.D. Clark, v. president, and M.R. Murray, asst. secretary. No vignette, Brown border and safety print. Uncancelled. Printer: ABNC, N.Y. Company owned 3360 acres of patented mining claims, including the Giroux Consolidated MC, the Butte & Ely Company, and claims in Mexico. There are 2 classes of ore deposits on the Nevada properties: 1) disseminated porphyry concentrating ore lying in large continuous masses that can be mined at low cost; and 2) direct smelting ore in fissure and replacement deposits in limestone at or near limestone-porphyry contacts. Regular shipments of these ores were commenced in the spring of 1917, at about 1500 tons per month, of ore averaging about 10% copper. Production in Nov. 1917 was at the rate of 1800 tons or ore daily, yielding 1,200,000 lbs. Of copper per month. “Litigation which hampered the company’s operations two or three years ago has all been satisfactorily adjusted...Management of the company is now in strong and able hands and a progressive operating policy is practiced.” [Ref: Copper Hanbook, 1918, pgs. 1187-89]. Uncancelled. Printer not noted. 6 x 9”. The Star of Nevada was listed as an active mine, but production was minor (Raymond, Spence). This certificate marks the period of very aggressive British investment in American mining companies and properties. The Treasure Hill district was one of the best example of British money nearly taking over a mining district. Another classic example of British investment took place on the Fremont Estate in California. Extremely fine. Est. $150-300 |
