857. Eastern. Newspaper. Daily National Intelligencer, 1822, 1846-53. Several of these issues from 1848 would have come out immediately after the discovery of gold in California— but quite possibly too soon for it to have been made public via the news media of the time, yet. A quick glance through these papers yielded no such mention of the discovery of gold in California. Est. $75-150

The deed was granted in 1837, but was originally surveyed in 1832, The original 1832 document has a plat map showing the 40 acres that Nicholas Goode had been granted by lottery. The plat was located within the ;...Gold Region in the lands at present in the occupancy of the Cherokee Indians The survey sheet has been repaired with clear tape although most pieces are present. Attached to the 1832 survey is what appears to be a wooden seal that probably had the Georgia State Seal, but is now worn. The second, 1837 document officially granted to 40 acres to Nicholas Goode is in much better condition with only minor wear and foxing. William Schey, James Anderson and Tho Copeland all signed the earlier document. The second document is signed by B. H. Robinson. Est. $150-300

One contains a summary of the report from the Mint showing the influx of California gold and related problems for the Mint. ;The California gold, brought to the Mint in the present year for coinage has increased our expenses, not only by its large amount, (exceeding $3,200,000 in value) but by the character of the gold itself, which contains a large portion of silver requiring a great and expensive increase in the laboratory and the employment of additional workmen. Most of these issues include a California correspondence column documenting the travails of those who rushed to find their fortunes in California. ;I have been cook for the last week. 867. Michigan. Ontonagon. Calumet. Italian Hall Disaster Stereocard Collection, c.1880-1900. Lot of 18 cards. These stereocards depict the infamous ;Italian Hall Disaster that took place during the copper mine strikes in Calumet, Michigan on Christmas Eve in 1913. The tragedy occurred at a benefit Christmas party for the children of the striking miners which was being held in an upstairs room at the Italian Hall. During the program someone opened the doors at the foot of the stairs leading outside and yelled ;Fire!. The party guests— who were mostly children— rushed downstairs towards the doors which openeded inwards. Most of the first children to reach the doors were crushed in the ensuing panic. There was, of course, no fire. It's believed that strike breakers hired by the mine captains were responsible for the disaster, but no one was ever arrested for nor convicted of the crime. In all, 73 victims (15 were adults and 58 were children) died of suffocation and entire families were killed in the Italian Hall Disaster. Today, all that remains of the Hall is the fabled doorway and a plaque in remembrance of those lost. Some of the stereocards in this lot show corpses, funeral processions and caskets. Other cards show the Hall interior and exterior. All are printed photocards. By Allied Printing, Trader Council. Captioned at bottom right in English and Finnish (many of the victims were from Finland). Some cards have brown stains which are minor. Overall, all very fine. Est. $400-800

868. Michigan. Ontonagon. Houghton. Pennsylvania Mining Co. Cert #211. Incorporated in Pennsylvania. Issued to Manufacturers National Bank for 66 shares in 1868. Signed by Joseph Wharton president and William F. Weaver secretary. Vignette of the Pennsylvania State Seal. Red border, print and vignette. Uncancelled. Printer not noted. 7 x 10. Datelined Philadelphia. ;Incorporated 1861, Consolidated With Delaware Mining Co printed below vignette. The Pennsylvania MC was but one step in a long series of failed operations. The company was formed through the reorganization of the failed Northwest Copper Co. Northwest itself was formed in 1849 from the previously existing Northwest Copper Mining Assoc formed in 1847. The Pennsylvania located new prospects in light of the poor return the previous mines had yielded. New mines were opened on the Eagle, the Branch and Trotter veins. It seems probable the new company fared no better then the last. In 1863, a portion of the estate of the Pennsylvania was purchased by the Delaware MC. This partnership ended in 1866 when the bondholders took possession of and operated the mines. Eventually, in 1876, a new company, the Delaware Copper MC was formed which, in turn, was sold to the Conglomerate MC which was succeeded by the Lac La Belle MC. (Wright, 1881). Joseph Wharton is the namesake of the famous Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania. Wharton made his fortune in a monopoly he developed in the nickel processing industry which led to a wealthy career in steel manufacturing. 25 cent revenue stamp affixed at upper left. We have not had an uncancelled certificate from this company. Extremely fine. Est. $350-700
