A crisp and clear photo captioned Capt Thos Couch and mine foremen at Mountain View, Butte, Mont.Three men with Couch are seated on a piece of mining equipment (probably shaft timbers) with a mill building in the background. All of the men have acid stains on their clothing. Photographer not noted. Thomas Couch was a Cornish miner who came to American and made his fortune. For years, Couch was the superintendent of the Boston & Montana, of which the Mountain View was one of the properties owned. During the midst of the War of the Copper Kings, while Marcus Daly fought for Anaconda to be the capital of Montana, W. H. Clark and Couch sided with Helena. Daly never forgot the betrayal of Couch and pitted F. Augustus Heinze to take down the Boston & Montana. Heinze was a notorious promoter who eventually went to jail in the early 1910's. Couch was whittled away at, while Daly, Clark and Heinze went on to fame (or infamy). As for the Mountain View mine, it was instrumental in the underground warfare at Butte. In October 1903, Heinze began illegally mining the Rarus by hand through a neighboring shaft. Finally caught red handed in December, opposing miners began dynamiting various stopes and adits to try and gain control. Several men died. In late December, miners from the Rarus blasted their way into the Mountain View and hand-to-hand combat ensued until the Rarus men were driven back with home made grenades. This was perhaps the worst of the battles. In early 1904, the Heinze faction was in retreat and within a few months the underground fighting was over - (dm). A great shot of one of the Copper Kings. Orphan Girl Presentation Silver Ingot, 1885. Inscribed C. D’Joselyn, Orphan Girl Mine, Butte City, MT. (Montana Territory) March 23, 1885. On a side panel is inscribed Jas. Moffet. 17mm x 47mm x 12mm tall. 2.78 troy ounces. We suspect containing both gold and silver, but we were not willing to perform the destructive test needed for assaying. Slightly trapezoidal shape. The Orphan Girl mine was one of many mines at Butte. This silver ingot was produced at a time when the mine was at its height of popularity and still relatively near surface in the ore zone while they were producing silver and gold with the copper. As the years and deposits quickly deepened, the ores shifted from silver rich to copper rich. Little mention is made of the mine in professional literature of the period. Burchard, in his 1885 Report of the Director of the Mint said the Orphan Girl has become one of the best known producers in the district.(p337) It had a shaft of 240 foot depth and a drift just begun at the 175 foot level. The mine supplied the Dexter Mill with about 30 tons of ore daily for the pre ceding year, circa 1883-4, though there is no mention of the mine in E&MJ in that period. In 1884 they produced 210,000 ounces of silver, 300 ounces of gold, valued at $231,700. The Orphan Girl mine may have been leased or purchased by one of several large companies that formed just after 1885: The Anaconda, Parrott, Moulton, or others. News of the mine seems to disappear from literature at that time. The Orphan Girl was not listed on the New York, Boston or San Francisco exchanges by 1889 either as a dividend paying or a non-dividend company. Detailed data for the Butte mines, the most important copper mines in America by 1885, was sketchy in Mining and Scientific Press and the Engineering and Mining Journal of the period. More research is needed. Though the Orphan Girl was not written up by Weed in his treatise on the Butte Mines, or listed in several of the histories of Butte, the mine played a significant part in Butte's history simply as a single contributor to the great mass of copper produced there. When George Hearst and partner Lloyd Tevis took Marcus Daly's suggestion to turn the small underground mines into the world's largest copper mine by putting all the properties together and mining on a bulk scale, they changed the world's course of mining forever. It was in Butte that the low grade open pit mining got its start. James Moffet probably gave this ingot to C. D’Joselyn. Moffet and/or D’Joselyn may have been involved with the financing of the mine, which may have been in New York. Neither is found in 1883-4 or 1889 directories for Butte and the surrounding areas during that period. Nor are they found in San Francisco directories, thus my assumption that the company is not based out of Montana or California, the two prominent mining financial centers for the west and Butte. Boston and New York were also pivotal in the financing of Butte mines, and I suspect it is in New York that more information will be found, since I also struck out with Boston. We did find one James Moffet in the New York Directory, 1855, owning a gas fixture and equipmentbusiness. Several questions arise in my research of this ingot: Who was the Orphan Girl? Was it D’Joselyn? More research is needed. Est. $5000-$10,000 489. Montana. Silver Bow. Butte. United Copper Co. Cert #2836. A common stock issued from Amsterdam, Holland, 1908. The stock has 20 coupons attached. Blue border and print on with light gray safety print. Uncancelled. Printer - Druk van J. H. de Bussy, Amst. Certificate is 7 x 9, unfolds with coupons to 9 x 21. United Copper Co was organized in 1902 and spent the next 10-15 years swindling unsuspecting investors of their money. By 1908, the company that F. Augustus Heinze had built was falling like a house of cards. A lengthy description of the deception is listed in the Copper Handbook, 1910, but is too lengthy to list here. But this paragraph may give the reader an idea of the company: The United Copper Co is operated as a blind pool by F. Augustus Heinze, who has shown himself utterly rapacious, unscrupulous and conscienceless in his mining and financial operations. Shareholders were tremendous losers in the slump of 1907, when both preferred and common shares declined to merely nominal values. About one-third of the common stock is said to be held in Holland, and the unfortunate Dutch investors were endeavoring June 1911, to obtain some explicit information regarding the company's affairs. In view of all the facts, the United Copper Co can be considered only as an exceptionally daring piece of stockjobbery.(Copper Handbook, 1910, p.1723-24). Very fine. Est. $100-200 490. Montana. The Alice G&SMC was incorporated in 1880, not in the 1900's and the style of this certificate is consistent with the 1880's. The company was incorporated in Utah. Owned the Alice, Magna Charta, Curry, Valdemer, Rooney and many other claims on the Rainbow lode. By 1888, $1.5 million in dividends had been paid. The company and property was purchased in 1906 by the Butte Coalition MC, and later there was an attempt by Anaconda to purchase the property. (Mines Handbook, 1918, p.977-978). Extremely fine.
